So I sent that FSMTA drafted letter to all the Florida Senators concerning that "body contouring" bid by cosmetologists. I emailed every one of them, and you should to!

The Letter:

Greetings,

As a Florida Licensed Massage Therapist, I am writing to urge that you DO NOT approve HB733 due to language within the bill affecting the Florida Massage Therapy Practice Act, s. Chapter 480.

If "aesthetic body contouring services" were strictly cosmetic, why would there need to be an exemption under Massage Therapy law?

Body contouring referred to as a cosmetic treatment typically focuses on targeting and eliminating fat cells predominantly in the abdomen, thighs, buttocks, and arms. When a treatment is designed to affect deeper layers of the dermis and hypodermis (which contains fat cells, nerves, blood vessels, and lymph fluid), it has moved beyond the epidermis, the skin one can see and ceases to be within a cosmetologist's scope of practice.

Treatments designed to contour the body manipulate connective tissue that affects lymph flow and should be administered by professionally trained health care professionals, not beauty professionals. No exemption should be allowed for cosmetologists to provide a medical treatment outside their scope of practice, and which poses potential harm to the public. This legislation serves to circumvent the education and licensure necessary to provide massage therapy and bodywork under current health care laws.

I urge you to reject the "aesthetic body contouring services" provision in HB733.

Respectfully,

Joe Williamson

the FSMTA dont play! We shut it down!

Cosmeotologists trying to get "body contouring" exempt from massage therapy statutes, NOT! .
WE DID IT!
YOU SPOKE UP AND HELPED US PROTECT MASSAGE THERAPY!
Our efforts in reaching legislators had their intended effect. Thank you everyone that read our messages and acted!

Senate Bill 902 (SB902) was postponed twice and finally brought to the floor on Wednesday, March 11, 2026. This was the companion bill to House Bill 733 (HB733). The Senate approved changes, including striking the amendment that we opposed, and sent it back to the FL House. The FL House did not take up HB733 before the Florida Legislative Session adjourned on Friday, March 13, 2026, thus rendering the bill DEAD.

The legislative process is often slow but when something is introduced with little time to be addressed, we take note. We shouldn't need to fight to protect our profession but sometimes we must.
