Coping With Grief During the Holidays
The holidays are a time for joy, but they can also be especially difficult when you’re grieving someone you love. If you or someone you care about is facing loss this season, it’s okay to feel a mix of emotions — sadness, nostalgia, and even moments of happiness can all coexist.
Here are a few gentle reminders to help you through:
✨ Give yourself permission to feel. There’s no right or wrong way to grieve. Some days may feel heavier than others, and that’s okay.
🕯️ Create new traditions, or honor old ones. You might choose to remember your loved one in a way that feels meaningful — whether it’s lighting a candle, sharing stories, or doing something they enjoyed.
🤝 Lean on others. Surrounding yourself with supportive friends or family can make a big difference. You don’t have to go through this alone.
🌿 Take care of your needs. Rest when you need to, eat well, and take breaks from festivities if they become overwhelming.
💬 Talk about how you feel. Sharing your thoughts and memories with someone who cares can be healing and comforting.
This season can be tender, and it’s okay to show kindness to yourself. If you’re struggling, reach out to someone you trust — support and understanding are powerful.
“It’s the most wonderful time of the year,” the song tells us. But if you’re dealing with grief — namely the death of a loved one — the holiday season can become a barrage of painful reminders that your life isn’t what you had hoped.
