The Excalibur Award was created and launched by the Rockford Register Star in 1971 to honor individuals who excel in community service. Congratulations to this year’s three finalists: Dr. H. Cyrus Oates, Karen Tilly, and our very own Penny Wirtjes!
As many of you know, Penny was the driving force behind the opening of GiGi’s Playhouse Rockford in 2011. Over the past 15 years, her tireless work, volunteerism, and unwavering commitment have built not only programs and spaces, but a lasting legacy of hope, inclusion, and opportunity for individuals with Down syndrome and their families.
