Shake up your Tuesday with Katie’s Playlist!

We’re all about JOY here at Outside OT and this week we interviewed Katie, who shares how she finds joy through music and nature.

Katie is 14 years old, loves to dance and go for long walks with her dog. On her playlist, you’ll find 4 songs guaranteed to lift your mood.

Katie has Down syndrome and lives in Colorado with her parents and her older sister. We interviewed Katie alongside her mother to get a family perspective on how nature is inherently inclusive.

Learn from this joyful mother-daughter duo in the third interview of our series about accessibility in the outdoors.

Go to www.outsideot.com/blog/nature-is-inclusive to find the interview and hear Katie’s playlist.

1. Shake it Off - Taylor Swift
2. Crocodile Rock - Elton John
3. Three Little Birds - Bob Marely & The Wailers
4. Chained to the Rythm - Katy Perry, Skip Marley

What are the barriers to accessibility and inclusion in outdoor classrooms? How is the pandemic contributing to an increase in developmental delays in children?

These are the types of questions we discuss in our second interview of our series about accessibility in outdoor programs.

We speak to Amy Butler, the Director of Education at North Branch Nature Center in Vermont. Why her? Amy founded the Educating Children Outdoors (ECO) program 12 years ago and now partners with 13 local public schools to get students outside in nature. Amazing work, Amy!

Tune into our interview with Amy to hear about:
🌲Nature's role in language development, reading, writing, communication, socialization and emotional regulation
🌲Barriers (and some solutions!) to getting public school classrooms outside
🌲Disability and neurodiversity inclusion and accessibility efforts in outdoor schools and programs
🌲Amy's new book!

🌟Pro tip: Listen to this video on-the-go, like a podcast!🌟

Ever wonder how early childhood outdoor educators can build programs with accessibility and inclusion in mind? Or how outdoor professionals and teachers can support kids with sensory, cognitive, social or emotional challenges?

These are the types of questions we think about. So, we asked Dr. Rachel Larimore from Samara Early Learning. Why her? Rachel literally wrote the book on how to start a nature school. She coaches early childhood educators through starting a program or adding more nature into their current programs.

Watch our interview with Dr. Rachel Larimore to hear:
🌟 Inclusivity and accessibility tips for outdoor educators
🌟 How to support kids who are neurodiverse or who have a disability (both from a teaching perspective and an administrative or program development perspective!)
🌟 Ways to help children overcome behavioral challenges in an outdoor setting

You know it’s been a cold January when 10 degrees and sun feels like a warm day! 😂

It can be tough to get kids outside on these coldest days, but it’s always worth it. Nature provides opportunities for deep connection and joy that helps keep us all warm 💙

We’ve been doing some exciting vision and core value work at Outside OT. One of our exercises has been to take an assessment to see how our strengths align. Total validation that we are a match made in heaven!

Nicole is our visionary and strategic thinker. Lis is our relationship builder and executor. Our top five strengths were mostly different but we matched perfectly in our third - Empathy!

We’re heading into the holidays to rest and recharge, but we’re feeling focused and ready for a big 2022 for Outside OT!

Happy Holidays from Lis and Nicole at Outside OT 🎄🎁🎊

Got a kid who is anxious about getting the Covid shot? Try these 2 tips.

💉 1. One way to support a child dealing with anxiety about the vaccine is to use a social story. A social story is a short visual story book that lets the child know the expectations beforehand. So, Lis made one of course! Download our social story for free at outsideot.com/blog/vaccine

🌲 2.Another great way to support your child with anxiety about the Covid shot is to spend time outside before and after. Read our social story after taking a short walk. Then, follow getting the shot with more nature-time. Consider stopping at the playground or park on your way home from the doctor.

We had a wonderful morning yesterday at Raven Ridge Natural Area birding with The Yellow House Community! It was an honor to partner with Bridget to organize this accessible outing as a part of Birdability Week 2021. Together, we planned ahead to provide supports and activities designed to truly include birders with disabilities.

The birds were out and about and we were able to spend some time with a Golden Crowned Kinglet, identify the sounds of Chickadees, and watch a soaring Cooper’s Hawk. It was an outing filled with laughter, bird calls, train whistles, and FUN!
