When a Wheelchair Doesn’t Feel Right… There’s Usually a Reason.
One of our recent consults is a patient who has lived with a spinal cord injury for nearly 50 years. He lives alone, uses a manual wheelchair with power-assist wheels, and works hard every day to maintain his independence despite significant shoulder injuries and limited hand function.
Recently, he received a new wheelchair from another clinic. The goal was to improve his posture and support his scoliosis.
But… the moment he started using it, something felt wrong.
He didn’t feel stable.
If he leaned forward to pick something up, he struggled to return upright.
During leg spasms, his heel would catch on the flip-up footplate and pull his shoe off — something that’s difficult to fix with limited hand function.
Eventually, he stopped using the new chair altogether and went back to his old one.
Still searching for answers, he traveled more than an hour to our clinic to meet with our wheelchair seating specialist.
Our team performed a detailed clinical seating evaluation to assess his posture, pressure management, and stability. What we found was that several well-intentioned changes in the new chair were actually working against his body.
By carefully adjusting the seating system — including seat depth, seat slope, back support, pelvic support, cushion selection, and footplate configuration — we were able to restore the stability and pressure relief he needed.
The difference was immediate.
He felt safe, supported, and confident in his chair again.
Wheelchair seating is not one-size-fits-all. Comprehensive knowledge about postural correction and seating equipment helps. But the right fit cannot be achieved without understanding the person, their injury, their strength, and how they move throughout the day.
Our specialists perform comprehensive seating and positioning evaluations to ensure optimal posture, pressure management, mobility, and long-term health.
If something about a wheelchair doesn’t feel right, it’s worth getting a second opinion.
