Did you know people with type 1 or type 2 diabetes are at risk for developing diabetic retinopathy, which can be painless and occur without visible symptoms or warning signs? If diabetic retinopathy progresses undiagnosed, surgical procedures might be necessary; however, once vision is lost, it often cannot be restored. A dilated retinal exam at least once a year with your doctor of optometry is the only way to limit the potential for significant vision loss from diabetic retinopathy.
