Let’s talk about something that’s rarely explained clearly in the birth space.
👉🏽 You are NOT required to have your baby’s name finalized the moment they are born. Not everyone has a name "ready".
There is a LOT of pressure placed on parents, especially in hospital settings, to complete paperwork quickly, pick a name immediately, and sign documents without much explanation.
But here’s what you should understand:
📌 The birth certificate process begins with a worksheet/application - not the certificate itself.
📌 That paperwork is typically facilitated by hospital staff, but it is still YOUR responsibility and YOUR signature.
📌 You have the right to ask questions, review what you’re signing, and take your time before completing anything.
Now let’s talk about the name…
In many cultures, naming a child is a ceremony - something intentional, spiritual, and done with thought over time… not rushed within hours of birth.
And yet here?
You’re often expected to decide immediately, while recovering, exhausted, and sometimes overwhelmed.
That doesn’t sit right with me.
⚖🏽 In Georgia, parents do have a window of time to ensure birth information is properly submitted to vital records. It does NOT all have to be finalized in that hospital room.
That said, let’s be clear: This isn’t about refusing everything or creating conflict.
This is about being informed, intentional, and not operating under pressure.
Because anything you sign matters.
✨ Read before you sign
✨ Ask questions
✨ Move with clarity, not urgency
Your child’s name is not just paperwork. It’s identity. It’s meaning. It’s legacy.
And that deserves more than a rushed decision.
If this is something you’ve never been told… now you know. 💭
And if someone is rushing you or making it seem like you “have to” do it immediately…
Ask them to show you exactly where that requirement exists.
