Madera County Department of Public Health The Madera County Public Health Department protects and promotes the health of our community.

The Madera County Department of Public Health protects and promotes the health of our community by means of preventive medical and educational services. Our department is also responsible for enforcing all state and local health laws. Some of our services and programs include Emergency Preparedness, Communicable Disease Control, HIV/AIDS surveillance and supportive services, senior citizens preventive health, Child Health and Disability Prevention, California Children Services, Childhood Lead Prevention, public health laboratory analysis, vital statistics, maternal child and adolescent health case management and nursing services, immunization clinics, Women Infants and Children, and health education programs addressing teen pregnancy, nutrition, obesity, tobacco use, and asthma.

Is your smartphone turning you into a sleepless zombie? 🧟‍♂️ 📱

While it may seem like an innocent activity, reaching for your phone in bed could be affecting your sleep health more than you realize.

The blue light emitted by smartphones, TVs, computers and video game screens is the enemy of a good sleep.

It can confuse your body clock, overstimulate your brain and disrupt melatonin levels (the hormone that makes us feel drowsy). Blue light can also reduce the amount of time spent in slow-wave and REM sleep, two stages of sleep that are vital for cognitive functioning.

And if you're using your phone right before bed, this is all happening at a time when your body should be winding down.

Try these tips for a better sleep:
🤳 Switch off the screens at least 30 minutes before bedtime
🌙 Use ‘night time mode’ on your electronic devices
📵 Try to use the hour before bed to do relaxing activities that don’t involve devices with screens
💤 Stick to a consistent sleep, wake and meal schedule to help generate melatonin

Aunque parezca una actividad inocente, usar el móvil en la cama podría estar afectando tu sueño más de lo que crees.

La luz azul que emiten los smartphones, televisores, ordenadores y pantallas de videojuegos es la enemiga de un buen descanso.

Puede desajustar tu reloj biológico, sobreestimular tu cerebro y alterar los niveles de melatonina (la hormona que nos da sueño). La luz azul también puede reducir el tiempo que pasas en sueño de ondas lentas y sueño REM, dos fases del sueño vitales para el funcionamiento cognitivo.

Y si usas el móvil justo antes de acostarte, todo esto ocurre cuando tu cuerpo debería estar relajándose.

Prueba estos consejos para dormir mejor: 🤳 Apaga las pantallas al menos 30 minutos antes de acostarte.
🌙 Activa el modo nocturno en tus dispositivos electrónicos.
📵 Intenta usar la hora previa a dormir para realizar actividades relajantes que no impliquen el uso de pantallas.
💤 Mantén un horario regular de sueño, vigilia y comidas para favorecer la producción de melatonina.

Keep using your WIC benefits.
Attend your WIC appointments.
Stay in contact with your local WIC office.

WIC and CalFresh are separate programs. Each program is funded and managed separately. CalFresh benefits delays do not affect WIC benefits or services. Both programs support food access for families.

Stay Informed! Check the status of WIC services through the MyFamily website or the California WIC App.
