SAFETY & DESTINATION ZERO

At PHI Air Medical, safety drives our every decision. Everything we do comes back to the safety of our crew and our patients and it is why we outfit each aircraft we fly with the most advanced technology and subject our crews to the most rigorous protocols and training anywhere. It is also why we ensure that the most advanced and efficient technology is an essential and required component of every
aircraft we operate. PHI Air Medical has remained well below the national accident rate average and was the first company to receive the prestigious Vision Zero Aviation Safety Award. We have achieved historic milestones over the past few years and have identified and initiated the following innovations to build on our culture of safety. We also recognize that human factors play a critical role in safety. It is why we have empowered our employees across the company to Stand Up, Speak Out and Take Action against unsafe behavior through our leading Destination Zero initiative.

Flight Operations
PHI Operations: “Indiana 7, scene flight request Ripley County”
Indiana 7 Pilot: “Indiana 7, checking weather”

When we’re dispatched for a flight, a weather check is immediate. The pilot is checking weather at our base, weather at the scene and surrounding areas, and weather at the intended receiving hospital. Operations Control Center (OCC) is contacted to have another set of eyes and determine if the weather is safe to complete a mission. The medical crew is included in this process and if all four agree, the flight is accepted. From there, a flight plan is made.
Shoutout to Ripley County EMS for the great patient care and teamwork!

Ed made sure the hangar apron was cleared, after our recent snowfall, so we were mission ready when the weather cleared!

Your Community In Action

It is uncommon for our Emergency Department to require multiple aircraft simultaneously. However, when the need arises, our local community partners step up to ensure safe and effective operations 🚁. We extend our sincere gratitude to the Masonic Lodge for the use of their parking lot as an alternate landing site for the second aircraft; the Carrollton Police Department and Carrollton Fire Department for securing the landing zone and nearby roadways, ensuring a safe landing 🚓🚒; and Carroll County EMS for assisting the medical crew and equipment through challenging snow conditions ❄️. This collaboration exemplifies a community working together for the safety and well-being of its residents 🤝❤️.
