It's not your fault if your nervous system has learned responses that create chronic pain. It is a very human survival response that was turned on to try to protect you.

Chronic pain, in absence of a clear physical explaination, is the result of a learned response of the nervous system.

This could have happened because of past traumatic events in childhood, a current stressful situation, an accumulation of pressures and challenges you've been faced with, or a combination of all of these.

The brain can perceive a negative emotion as a threat. When this happens, the emotion can become repressed and stored in the body. The more unsoothed emotions that get repressed, the more they build and start to bubble up to the surface.

These negative emotions can cause a danger alarm to go off in the brain, sending pain signals. You can get stuck in an emotionally triggered chronic pain cycle. The good news is this was learned and can be unlearned, reprogrammed so to speak.

Many people who suffer from chronic pain have found that their condition was caused by emotion-related memories “stored in the body”. These long forgotten feelings can show up as various physical symptoms which leaves us feeling like there's nothing we can do to get better.

The symptoms of stress and past traumas can manifest physically. We all know that diet, exercise and genetics contribute to our health and disease process. But not many of us realize the huge role that emotions play. My experience has shown me that emotions deserve an equal seat at the table.

Our subconscious mind keeps record and stores absolutely every experience we have ever had. When a stress response is triggered our subconscious takes over. It recognizes the trigger as being similar to an original event where a stress response was developed. Therefore, a current event may not seem like it should be stressful but our body experiences the stress response of the original event anyhow. We must do the work to heal the traumas held in our subconscious mind/body.

Emotions were the unrecognized factor which was affecting me physically on a daily basis. I struggled with daily physical pain for years. I did everything right with food and exercise but I continued to suffer. Everything changed when a friend said to me, "have you considered that there could be an emotional trigger to your physical pain?"

Are you the boss of your feelings or do your feelings run and disrupt your life?⁠

When we are emotionally unstable it is because there is something from our past which needs to be healed. Our subconscious keeps record of every single moment of our life.

We over react because we are triggered not by what is happening, but because what is happening reminds our nervous system of a similar situation from our past which was traumatic. Trauma can actually come from a very minor event. Losing a favorite toy can be viewed as traumatic from the perception of a child.

Cognitive behavioral therapy can only take a person so far. Generally progress is slow, over a long period of time. This is because the subconscious is not addressed in CBT. At least 90% of our reactions and behaviors come from our subconscious mind. Therefore, we can learn new coping skills, really want to change and want to be less reactive, but when triggered our subconscious takes over.

I am not saying that there isn't value in CBT. I am saying that for me it alone wasn't enough. When a friend introduced me to rREST, I felt like I got more progress out of just a few sessions than I had gotten out of decades of other types of cognitive behavioral therapies.

When we feel triggered it isn't about what's happening in that moment. All of our emotional triggers originate from childhood, prior to 7 years old. The brain records the original event where a threat was perceived, the emotions involved, and how the event was successfully survived. As we experience similar situations the brain recognizes the similarity, recalls how we survived the last time and goes to that same coping strategy over and over again throughout your life.

An event which is perceived as traumatic or threatening to a young child is very different when the same event is viewed from an adult perspective. Something as simple as taking away a child's pacifier is recorded as a traumatic event from the child's perspective. You don't have to have a significant history of trauma to be affected negatively by emotional triggers.

Our subconscious programming from childhood is responsible for >90% of our behaviors and reactions in adulthood.

This programming can be problematic in adulthood. Our subconscious may perceive a threat, which from an adult perspective isn't really a threat, but the original subconscious coping method takes over. Therefore, we react to current situations from the perspective of our inner child's original event.

Through biofeedback, rREST (rapid Reprogramming of Emotional Stress Technique) uncovers the original event, soothes the emotions involved, and allows us to create a new coping strategy for a particular trigger going forward.
