Betty Smith, daughter of immigrants, wrote A Tree Grows in Brooklyn based on her experiences growing up in poverty at the beginning of the 20th century.

The female characters in the book embody resilience and remind me of my maternal grandmother who endured incredible hardships yet found joy in small things and shared her generosity with everyone.

Dr. Laura Saved My Friend's Life

I wanted to share a personal story this month because it is a direct reflection on why I get up every morning and go to work for Associated Physicians. I do it for our doctors, for our team, and for the real impact all of us working together, truly has on our community.

Recently, a good friend had a health revelation. After years of excruciating pain, begging for a hysterectomy after her two girls were born, she was told it “wasn't that bad” and “just take an Advil”.

Then, her insurance changed, and after encouragement from her sister, she says she: “finally found a doctor who listened. Who didn't dismiss me. Who didn't gaslight me when I asked again for a hysterectomy.”

She says, “Had I not found a doctor who believed me and fought insurance for me, my cancer would have progressed, and I'd be fighting for my life right now.”
