We have the most amazing team of people here at the Recovery Foundation! 🌻

Board member Mary Schneider is a Professor Emerita in the Department of Kinesiology (Occupational Therapy Program) and Psychology, at the University of Wisconsin-Madison. Her research focused on the effects of prenatal alcohol and/or prenatal stress exposure on neurobehavioral development and brain function. Her current work uses state-of-the-art neuroimaging techniques to examine neuro adaptational brain changes in neurotransmitter function after chronic alcohol consumption. Mary has been a grateful member of Al-anon for over 30 years, also facilitating al-anon meetings at the Dane County Jail. She also facilitates alateen meetings, ans has given presentations over the years on the role of the family in adolescent substance abuse recovery.

Here is a recent article published in The Journal of Neuroscience that Mary wrote along with a team of other brilliant people.

Given the prevalence of alcohol use and stress during pregnancy, we examined the effects in offspring of prenatal alcohol and stress on the dopamine system and drinking behavior in a primate model. In a 20-year prospective longitudinal experiment, we studied alcohol-naive adult rhesus monkeys of bot...

Do you know the significance of the sunflower in regards to mental health and substance recovery? 🌻

Well, naturally, sunflowers reorient themselves towards the light. The sunflower signifies strength, hope, tenacity, and survivability- all attributes aligned with individual growth and recovery.

Here is a poem written by our Executive Director Roger Ray Bird, reminding us to always keep looking for the light.

“Doubt Not In Hope And This Truth”

Our journey grand, but alas, no picnic

The clouds, they stalk us.

And yet, the sun she is ever-present, lurking behind the darkness

The black sky dumps tears atop our head, yet she shines still.

The sun, she is there, burning bright, she always there

This no fable, mere no metaphor no riddle, this total truth.

Do not await the trip off the tarmac to see it, to know it as so

Hope we all feel her warm and loving rays, more than not.

Strive to remember, she is there, always there, the sun

She warms us, casts light upon our world, even when dark.

That is, when we choose to feel her, choose to see her

Doubt not in hope and this truth, feel the sun, despite the clouds.

🙏🏾🌻🫶

Helping Amazing People Find Their Way Back...

Over 100 people die everyday from a drug overdose. Over 20 million Americans over the age of 12 have some type of substance abuse (other than to***co) addiction.

In Wisconsin, there were 883 opioid related overdose deaths in 2017; a 7% increase over 2016... a 35% jump from 2015.

The stigma and the face of addiction has changed dramatically over the years. Today, it’s our neighbors and coworkers. It’s our siblings, friends, spouses, parents, and children...

Recovery is an opportunity for these amazing people who are dedicated to getting their lives back. It’s the process of change, through which people can improve their health and wellness and strive to once again live a life to their full potential! People with severe and chronic substance use disorders can, with effective treatment, overcome their illness and regain control of their lives. The Recovery Foundation is committed to helping these people find their opportunity through their recovery.
