Happy Earth Day! 🌳 🌱 🌎 ♻️

Each year, we celebrate our planet by planting a tree at one of our clinics. At UnityPoint Health - Meriter, we believe health and wellness for our patients, team members and communities begins with a healthy environment.

That's why we founded the Meriter Green Team in 2018, a group of team members dedicated to sustainability improvement projects. From recycling over 376,400 pounds of materials last year to reducing operating room waste and composting or donating our leftover food, Meriter is passionate about our planet! 🌍 💚

When Joan Lin learned that the type of plastic wrap commonly used in shipping and receiving cannot be recycled through traditional facilities, she saw an opportunity to make a difference at our hospital. Rather than letting it go to waste, Joan brought her idea to UnityPoint Health – Meriter’s Supply Chain and Green Team to make a plan.

The Supply Chain department and other units began setting aside their used plastic wrap after it was removed from hospital supplies. After her shifts, Joan sorts through and prepares the plastic, then delivers it to local grocery stores that partner with Trex Company, who ensure the material is properly recycled.

Since the fall of 2024, Joan has helped recycle over 1200 pounds of plastic wrap and counting. She's also worked to get other departments involved in plastic collection all over the hospital!

“My family is from Taiwan,” Joan said. “In the U.S., we take a lot of resources for granted and create more waste than we should, especially plastic. The extra effort to recycle it is worth it, even if it helps the planet in a small way.”

As a nurse of 14 years at Meriter, Joan is passionate about sustainability and dedicated to making a difference. She believes small actions have a big impact, and everyone has a part to play in keeping excess waste out of landfills. you can join Joan's mission by delivering your own plastic waste to a participating grocery store near you!

Last month, a volunteer surgical team led by longtime UnityPoint Health – Meriter Ear, Nose and Throat (ENT) surgeon, Dr. Michael McDonald, spent a week in La Ceiba, Honduras, collaborating with their local medical team, changing lives with important surgeries and interventions.

The team evaluated 44 patients, performed 25 operations and saw 274 people to be fitted for hearing aids. Since 1998, Dr. McDonald has led surgical teams from Wisconsin to Honduras, bringing supplies and assisting with head, neck and ear procedures.

Dr. Matthew Lister, a clinical professor at University of Wisconsin School of Medicine and Public Health, is most proud of how they've transformed this once week-long volunteer trip into a year-round audiology clinic. By assisting with equipment and training to local medical teams, volunteers and students.

"This has greatly amplified the impact of our past efforts and is the definition of local capacity building which is one of the modern cornerstones of global health initiatives," Dr. Lister says.
