Have you ever been floating, or even just about to fall asleep at home, and you feel a big jolting sensation? 😳

That's called a "hypnagogic jerk" (or "hypnic jerk" for short), and it happens as your body starts to relax. You can find several different possible causes, but it's believed that your nervous system is essentially resetting from a state of awareness or alert to a more calming, resting state. It's a good thing, even though it's pretty annoying to experience. If it happens to you, just take a breath, be grateful for your newfound state of relaxation, and carry on with your floating bliss.

If you're hoping to start or amplify your meditation practice, you might like a "counting" practice. It helps to keep you on track with a single point of focus, without pushing for a specific outcome. You can practice this at home and also during your next float.

πŸ”’ Find a comfortable place to sit.
πŸ”’ Set a timer.
πŸ”’ Know that your goal is NOT to reach zero. It's just to be aware of your thoughts to become conscious of when they drift away.
πŸ”’ Soften or close your eyes.
πŸ”’ Begin breathing with intention - slow breaths in and out. As you exhale, count 100.
πŸ”’ On your next exhale, count 99.
πŸ”’ Continue counting backwards, one exhale at a time.
πŸ”’ If you lose track of your counting or notice you're thinking about something else, smile and congratulate yourself for noticing, then start again at 100.
πŸ”’ Continue until time is up.

Many people never make it below 90, and that's okay! It's a practice to learn when you're distracted!

We can't even count the number of times someone has come in skeptical of the float experience, or even grumpy because their friend or significant other is "making them do it", and then they come back out all smiley and blissful.

You can't escape the "post-float glow"!

It's important to remember that growth is not a linear process, and everyone's journey looks a little different. We often feel like we must hold ourselves to arbitrary standards based on what our peers our doing, what we think we should be doing, or because we read a compelling article in a magazine while waiting at the dentist office.

Wherever you are right now, is exactly where you're meant to be. There's never one final feeling of "Okay, I made it! This is everything I've been working towards!" because once you're there, you still have to keep going. Your goals evolve, they change, they grow. Just like you.

Growth is a gradual process of micro-decisions with no wrong answers. Next time you float with us, maybe take some time to reflect on your own journey and appreciate how far you've come.

One question we often hear is, "Why should I float? What does it do?" We could gush for a while about how many different ways float therapy can help you improve your wellbeing. But we'll just stick to a few of the top reasons for now. πŸ˜‰

Good mornings start with good nights. πŸ’€

Having a consistent time to go to sleep and to wake up supports your body's circadian rhythm, and promotes the restoration your body needs. ⏰⏰ Even if you can't get to bed at your regular time, keeping a consistent waking time has been shown to be key to getting better sleep overall. πŸ₯°

Bonus tip: rather than using your phone as an alarm clock, use an old-school alarm. It reduces the temptation to check email or start scrolling in the morning!

Did you know that the magnesium sulfate we use in our float pods will nourish and heal your skin? Most guests notice how soft it is, even without moisturizing after a float. Yet another reason to love floating!

Our Story

Greg has been involved in the health and wellness industry since 2007. While in school for nutrition, working in the wellness department of his community grocery co-op and learning everything he could about being as self-sufficient as possible on farm he was renting, his stress levels were becoming difficult to manage. He discovered float therapy back in 2011, and after hearing about the physical and mental benefits, he had to give it a try. He drove down to what was then the closest float center in the area, a place in Chicago that has offered floating since the early 1980's. That first float changed everything. It was like a complete physical and mental reset. For the next 3 years he made the 5 hour round-trip every few months to float for that reset of body and mind. Eventually, he grew tired of trying to convince friends to open up a place in Madison, and he decided that he would be the one to provide the revolutionary tool to his community.
