As this year winds down, I just want to take a minute to thank my crew. This first year of owning the funeral home has had a lot of unknowns and a LOT of learning… new expenses, long days, stress, you name it. But y’all have stuck with me through all of it.

I honestly couldn’t have done this without the people beside me every day. You’ve supported me, been patient while I figured things out, and helped carry the weight when things got tough. That means more to me than you know.

I’m proud of what we’ve built so far, and I’m really excited for what’s ahead in 2026. We’re growing, we’re getting stronger, and we’re doing it together.

Thank you all for everything.

If you’ve met David Vaden, you know immediately the kind of person he is, steady, kind, and committed to serving others.

David is the former owner and partner of JDK Automotive in Madison, where he spent many years building relationships through honest work and genuine care for the people of this community.

He is also a dedicated member of First Baptist Church of Mayodan, where he continues to pour into others with the same quiet strength and faith he brings to our funeral home.

We are incredibly grateful to have David on our team.
His work ethic, compassion, and deep roots in Western Rockingham County make him an invaluable part of what we do here.

Thank you, David, for the way you serve our families and our community.

Being locally owned means I’m not just here when the phone rings. It means I’m here every day, literally.

Today I spent the entire day getting up leaves and decorating the funeral home for Christmas.
I did it because this place is home to me, and I want it to feel warm and welcoming for every family who walks through the doors this season.

That’s what local ownership really looks like…
small things that people may never see, but that matter because this community matters.

It means the same person whose name is on the sign is the one sweeping the sidewalk, turning on the Christmas lights, meeting with families, setting up the tent, and personally preparing your loved one with dignity and care.

No boards.
No committees.
No stockholders.

It’s these small things that make a hometown funeral home. And I sure am proud of it💯

Sometimes I look back at the journey and can’t help but shake my head at how far things have come.

When I stepped into Ray Funeral Home as manager in 2017, the truth is… it was struggling. The reputation was hurting. The call volume was low. And it felt like the place had lost the pride and presence it once had in this community. But I believed in it. I believed in the staff that worked here. And I believed this little funeral home still mattered to the families here.

Those early years weren’t glamorous. I was a brand new funeral director, learning, rebuilding, making mistakes, fixing mistakes, and trying to earn back trust one family at a time. Some days it felt like I was pushing a boulder uphill. But slowly, with time, things began to change.

I don’t share this to brag. I share it because I’m grateful. Grateful for the families who gave me a chance when things weren’t perfect. Grateful for the support, the staff, the encouragement, and the people who said, “Keep going, you’re bringing it back”.

This funeral home has been part of this community for generations, and I’m proud….truly proud….to help carry its story forward.

The journey hasn’t always been easy… but it has always been worth it.
