Wisconsin Alliance for Infant Mental Health

Wisconsin Alliance for Infant Mental Health Infant mental health (IMH) is synonymous with social and emotional development in our youngest children.

We aim for all Wisconsin infants and young children to reach their fullest potential through nurturing and consistent relationships within the context of family, community, and culture Social and emotional development involves skills such as self confidence, curiosity, motivation, persistence, self control, and trust--all of which affect future learning, growth, and success. The development of all of these traits begins in infancy and within the context of relationships. Emotional and social milestones include a child's ability to experience, regulate and express emotions, and form close and secure interpersonal relationships. A child's capacities to identify their own feelings, experience empathy for another and constructively manage strong emotions are skills that begin in early childhood and support later learning.

The Wisconsin Office of Children's Mental Health (OCMH) released new Data Bites: 'bite-sized insights on youth mental health that share statistics, trends, and research findings intended to elevate the mental health issues facing Wisconsin’s youth.'

They share how early screen use can impact cognitive, language and socio-emotional development in babies and young children, noting some revealing statistics:
>> Babies who watch TV two hours per day are six times more likely to have language delays.
>> The brain triples in size from birth to two years old.
>> 90% of brain growth happens from birth to five years old.

Recommendations:
>> Babies 0-18 months old – no screens
>> Toddlers 18-24 months old – limited screens and co-viewed
>> Preschoolers ages 2-5 years old – limited screens, 30-60 minutes per day

Take our Relational Approaches with Neuro-Diverse Dyads: Community of Practice Survey!

Last year, WI-AIMH offered two staff-led trainings on neurodiversity: one in May titled "Nurturing Potential" by Dr. Abby Taylor, and one in August titled "Attachment & Neurodiversity" by Dr. Kris Barnekow.

Your interest in the topic and the two trainings have been overwhelmingly positive! Thank you! 🥰

Because of the continued interest in relational approaches with neuro-diverse dyads, WI-AIMH is considering offering a Learning Community (or, "Community of Practice") that would meet regularly to share information and approaches for practice.

Please fill out the interest form at tinyurl.com/WIAIMHCoPSurvey to help us gauge interest in and plan for a Community of Learning.

BIG News for Wisconsin!
"Wisconsin moves to expand postpartum Medicaid coverage

Republican state lawmakers who long blocked a bipartisan measure to expand postpartum Medicaid coverage for mothers in Wisconsin plan to pass the measure following pressure from Democratic lawmakers, with Gov. Tony Evers expected to sign it into law.

Women in Wisconsin will soon be eligible to receive expanded Medicaid coverage for up to a year after giving birth following near-unanimous passage of a measure on Feb. 19 by the Wisconsin Assembly."
