Wisconsin Alliance for Infant Mental Health

Wisconsin Alliance for Infant Mental Health Infant mental health (IMH) is synonymous with social and emotional development in our youngest children.

We aim for all Wisconsin infants and young children to reach their fullest potential through nurturing and consistent relationships within the context of family, community, and culture Social and emotional development involves skills such as self confidence, curiosity, motivation, persistence, self control, and trust--all of which affect future learning, growth, and success. The development of all of these traits begins in infancy and within the context of relationships. Emotional and social milestones include a child's ability to experience, regulate and express emotions, and form close and secure interpersonal relationships. A child's capacities to identify their own feelings, experience empathy for another and constructively manage strong emotions are skills that begin in early childhood and support later learning.

📣Community Event Announcement (hosted by the Indigo Cultural Center):
In less than two weeks, the first film of our Sankofa Project debuts to the world in a 4-day, February 10th -13th Premiere Week celebration!

The Sankofa Infant Mental Health History Project™ is a multi-year effort focused on retrieving the healing and relational wisdom from our pasts, cultures, and communities and telling a fuller history of Infant Mental Health (IMH) – including the contributions of professionals and communities of color and the role of power and privilege in the field’s development.

This project is a love letter to our field, co-created by the Sankofa Project Steering Collective and Indigo Cultural Center.

There are 4 different day/time options – starting Tuesday, Feb 10th – available on the registration link. https://bit.ly/SankofaPart1Premiere

We hope you join us! Please also help us spread the word!

Premiere Week registration fees are on a sliding scale for accessibility and support the sustainability of our multi-year Sankofa Project.

We are sharing resources to support families navigating fear, uncertainty, and exposure to violence in the news—particularly guidance for talking with young children ages 3–6 about immigration enforcement and community violence. These moments call for honesty, simplicity, reassurance and connection.

“Hope can be a powerful force. Maybe there's no actual magic in it, but when you know what you hope for most and hold it like a light within you, you can make things happen, almost like magic.” ― Laini Taylor

Emerging from the Chaos:
Yesterday brought a sharp reminder of how quickly things can escalate. News broke that federal funding for addiction and mental health services was being terminated, only to be reversed by the current administration after public outrage and pushback. While this funding does not directly impact Wisconsin Alliance for Infant Mental Health, it deeply affects our partners—including Children’s Wisconsin—and, most importantly, the infants, young children, families and communities who rely on these services. What happens to one part of the system ripples across all of us. We are connected, and the stability of families everywhere matters to the well-being of children here at home.

Our commitment to protecting infant and early childhood mental health, standing with our partners and supporting the most vulnerable remains steady.
