Congratulations to Bailey Donahue, Betsy Golomski and Rick Ziegler for winning our 2025 staff awards!

Bailey Donahue, research specialist in the Gibson Lab, was awarded the John Sopsick Award, which is presented annually to a warrior, an employee who represents the department in a manner of professional persistence and advocacy.

Betsy Golomski, GME Program Manager, was awarded the Layton F. Rikkers Award, which is presented annually to an employee who embodies the qualities that made Dr. Rikkers so very special: emotional intelligence, compassion, and vision.

Rick Ziegler, Chief Financial Officer, was awarded the Mary Marshall "Moving Surgery Forward" Award, which is given to a person who is dedicated to advancing the department's mission.

Almost a year ago, tragedy struck close to home when a shooter opened fire at Abundant Life Christian School in Madison, killing a teacher and fellow student and wounding six others. Two critically injured high schoolers were transported to University Hospital where they fought for their lives. Three medical professionals who responded to the shootings, including our own Dr. Adam Brinkman, UW Health’s pediatric trauma medical director, recount that fateful day and the remarkable story of survival.
