Playing away from adult supervision, or "free play," is crucial for children to develop autonomy, social skills, and emotional regulation without adult pressure.

It allows children to manage risks, solve conflicts, and build self-reliance. For adults, play is essential to reduce stress, spark creativity, and improve relationships.

Let them 🌳

When we consistently restrict movement, we're not protecting our children – we're becoming the barrier to their development.

Let them spin in circles, go upside down, jump off things, and move in ways that make adults gasp. That’s how they build balance, focus, and confidence.

Spring is just around the corner! Here are some wonderful things that you could do outside with your kids as the weather warms up:

*Have a scavenger hunt. You can look for specific objects or be a bit more general like: things that begin with the letter B, or something for each color of the rainbow

*Do leaf rubbings. All you need are paper, crayons and any new leaves you can find.

*Dig in the dirt. Find worms and bugs, make mud pies, and flip over rocks to see what you'll find

*Plant something. Get some flower or vegetable seeds and start your own garden.

*Make an obstacle course. Time each kid as they jump, roll, climb, step or go under the various obstacles. Added bonus: You can do this inside if needed.

*Get active. Play a game like twister or hopscotch, Simon Says, Mother-may-I or the freeze dance. Take turns picking and leading the games and get involved. Kids love when you play too!

*Learn something new. Try yoga or fishing. Dance alone in your room or out in the front yard. Build something with sticks, Lincoln logs or Legos. Share your creations or the new skills you learned with friends and relatives. Use social media if you can't get together in person.

*Do the alphabet workout. Create an ā€œexercise alphabetā€ by assigning an exercise to each letter of the alphabet. Then spell out your name, performing the exercise designated for each letter. Be sure to take a 15-20 second rest between each exercise.

Spring Break plans? Let’s take them outside!

LIVEfor TimberNook is bringing five full days of wildly wonderful outdoor play to LIVEfor TimberNook at The Vines March 23–27 from 9am–3pm.

Think forts built from fallen branches, stories dreamed up under open skies, problem-solving in puddles, and the kind of confidence that only grows when kids are free to explore. Our days are child-led, screen-free, and rooted in nature. Where creativity stretches as wide as the landscape.

And when Spring Break ends, we’re just getting started!

Our summer season includes 8 weeks of camp between June and August, each one packed with hands-on adventure, teamwork, imagination, and good old-fashioned outdoor fun. Register for a single week, or make it a summer to remember.

Spots are limited and our outdoor community is filling quickly! Come grow with us this spring and summer!

ā€œKids don’t remember their best day of television.ā€ - Unknown

Kids remember the backyard adventures.
The muddy shoes.
The belly laughs.
The scraped knees and the ā€œone more minute!ā€ before sunset.

The forts made of blankets, or whatever they can find.
The bugs they were brave enough to hold.
The bike rides that felt like freedom.

Screens entertain.
But adventures imprint.

Let’s give them stories worth telling, not just shows worth watching.

In a world where kids are often grouped strictly by age, there’s something incredibly powerful about bringing different ages together, especially outdoors.

Multi-age outdoor play creates a natural environment where children learn from each other in ways that structured classrooms simply can’t replicate.

Why It Matters:

* Leadership & Mentorship – Older kids naturally step into leadership roles. They guide, teach, and model skills, building confidence and empathy.

* Inspiration & Skill Building – Younger children observe and stretch their abilities. They try harder, climb higher, imagine bigger—because they see what’s possible.

* Stronger Social Skills – Mixed-age play encourages cooperation, patience, negotiation, and problem-solving. Kids learn to adapt their communication to different developmental levels.

* Real-World Learning – Life isn’t age-segregated. Multi-age play mirrors families and communities, helping children build real-world relationship skills.

* Creativity Without Limits – Outdoors, imagination takes over. Sticks become fishing poles. Rocks become treasure. And age differences fade when everyone is building a fort together.

When children of different ages explore nature side by side, something beautiful happens: confidence grows, friendships deepen, and learning becomes joyful and organic.

Let them mix. Let them lead. Let them learn from one another.

Outdoor play isn’t just recess it’s relationship building, resilience training, and lifelong skill development wrapped in sunshine and dirt.

Play stimulates neural connections, particularly in the prefrontal cortex (executive function), hippocampus (memory), and amygdala (emotion regulation). It also aids in developing motor skills and fostering both fine and gross motor proficiency.

High amounts of play are directly associated with lower cortisol levels, allowing the brain to be in a state better suited for learning.

While early years are critical, brain development continues until around age 25, with play remaining an important learning tool throughout childhood. Let's get our kiddos playing, no matter the age!

Unstructured outdoor play fosters creativity, social skills, and risk-management abilities.

Outdoor play helps children build strong bodies, sharp minds, and healthy social skills. Running, climbing, and exploring boost physical fitness, creativity, and confidence, while unstructured play teaches teamwork, problem-solving, and resilience. Fresh air isn’t just fun, it’s essential.

In a world of screens, time outside gives kids space to imagine, move freely, and connect with nature and with each other. Let’s give children more chances to play, explore, and grow outdoors!
