Wisconsin Voices For Recovery

Wisconsin Voices For Recovery Wisconsin Voices for Recovery is a statewide project that aims to eliminate stigma, build community, and make a difference in our state.

Wisconsin Voices for Recovery is a statewide peer-run movement that brings people together. We unite people that are in and seeking recovery, their family members, professionals, and allies. We want to be a collective voice to reduce the stigma around addiction and
recovery, let the public know that recovery is real and help foster positive changes in our treatment and our recovery programs and in the state of Wisconsin. Click here to sign up for our monthly e-newsletter: https://redcap.ictr.wisc.edu/surveys/?s=N3HY4JLR9XHWKPYX

This presentation addresses the critical but often ignored issue of mental health and substance use disorder among healthcare professionals. Utilizing open and honest dialogue and the powerful vehicle of personal narrative, the session aims to shatter the professional stigma that discourages cliniciansโ€”especially nursesโ€”from seeking help.

Kristin will provide a candid overview of the current state of mental health and substance use within the nursing workforce, identifying the systemic and cultural barriers that contribute to silence. The presentation will transition from identifying problems to providing practical solutions, covering how to effectively recognize when a peer may be struggling and outlining the specific, accessible well-being and substance use resources available in Wisconsin to support recovery and resilience.

With over three decades of nursing experience, Kristin has firsthand knowledge of the difficulties faced by nurses. Having personally experienced the challenges of mental health and substance use, she found recovery in 2005. She has created a lifeline for nurses seeking support and understanding by founding WisPAN, Wisconsin Peer Alliance for Nurses, providing a safe space for nurses to find support, share experiences, and build resilience. She has published a book called โ€œAn Unlikely Addictโ€, about her story of recovery and a textbook called โ€œSubstance Use Disorder in Healthcare Professionalsโ€. She is a Certified Addictions Registered Nurse, CARN, and a Certified Professional Recovery Coach, CPRC.

On this episode of Saturday Night Chat, Thea reflects on her recovery journey from alcohol use disorder, including how she got started, what recovery can mean in Wisconsin where alcohol is deeply ingrained in the culture, and what her life looks like now at six and a half years sober. In addition, she talks about the positive impact of sharing your story with others, and how it can facilitate connection. She also shares advice for people are on 'day one' of getting into recovery, and what brings her joy now that she is in recovery.

For a more in-depth look at Theaโ€™s recovery journey, listen to her guest appearance on the Recovery Elevator podcast here: https://www.recoveryelevator.com/re-544-trying-to-control-an-uncontrollable-thing/.
