Doyle Speech and Beyond

Doyle Speech and Beyond We focus on building real-life communication skills your child can use every day. As a mom myself, I know how much it matters to feel heard and supported.

At Doyle Speech & Beyond, we offer personalized, play-based speech therapy designed to meet your child where they are and help them grow in ways that feel natural and fun. I’m Alyssa Doyle, a pediatric speech therapist with over ten years of experience working with young children and their families. After graduating with my master’s degree, I began my career in New York’s Early Intervention program and later spent several years in New Jersey public schools, supporting children from preschool through third grade. Along the way, I’ve led early literacy programs, supported AAC users, and mentored other SLPs— all while focusing on helping kids become confident, capable communicators. I started Doyle Speech and Beyond because I wanted to offer more personalized, family-centered care than what’s often possible in larger systems. My mission is to meet each child where they are, follow their lead, and use play, connection, and trust to spark real growth. Outside of work, I love spending time in nature with my husband and our two-year-old son. I enjoy baking sourdough bread, practicing yoga, and slowing down to appreciate family life. Some of my favorite places are the comfort of home, the peaceful Mohonk Mountain House in New York, and the charm of Cape May, NJ.

Skip the questions. Model instead.
When you pull out the gingerbread man this season, try shifting from asking lots of questions to simply showing the language you want your child to learn. Instead of “What color is his hat?” try modeling “Hat on” or “I see a red hat.” This takes the pressure off your child and helps them soak in meaningful, natural language during play.

Why this works:
Children learn best when they hear simple, repeated language in context. Too many questions can feel like a pop quiz, especially for little ones who are still learning how to understand and express themselves. Modeling gives them a clear roadmap for words and phrases they can try when they are ready.

During gingerbread play you might model:
• “Run run run”
• “He is fast”
• “Uh oh he fell”
• “Cookie man goes in”
• “My turn your turn”

If you want more support using play to boost your child’s communication, I would love to help. Reach out to schedule a consultation at Doyle Speech and Beyond. alyssadoyle@doylespeechandbeyond.com

Sometimes I look at the cars all over the floor and the Little People scattered everywhere and think what a mess. But he sees fun. He sees discovery. He sees a world he is creating one tiny idea at a time. I’m learning to slow down and join him there. The mess is temporary. The connection is what lasts. Give yourself grace today.

Two questions I always ask when parents are worried about their child’s speech:
1. Does your child snore?
2. Have you had their hearing tested?

These two areas may seem unrelated to speech but they play a big role in how children learn to understand and produce language.

Snoring:
If a child snores or breathes through their mouth at night, it can be a sign that airflow isn’t as clear as it could be. This can affect sleep quality. When children are not getting deep, restful sleep, it is harder for their bodies and brains to regulate emotions, learn new skills, and practice the coordination needed for speech. Sometimes snoring can also point to enlarged tonsils or adenoids that may impact how sounds are produced. A good sleep monitor, like Harbor, can help you gently track nighttime breathing patterns. It gives helpful insight without needing to guess what might be happening overnight.

Hearing:
Even a mild hearing difference or fluid in the ears can make speech sound muffled. Imagine learning words when everything sounds like you are underwater. If a child can’t clearly hear the sounds around them, it will naturally be harder to imitate those sounds or learn new words.

So before worrying about “late talking,” I always check the foundation first.
Healthy breathing. Clear hearing. Supportive environment.

If you’re noticing concerns in either area, I’m here to help you sort through next steps and resources that feel doable and supportive for your family.

Speech Tip: Growing Gratitude in Toddlers

Gratitude starts long before toddlers can say “thank you.” It begins with noticing kindness and hearing those thankful words modeled often.

Try this:

✨ When your child gives you a toy, say “Thank you for sharing!”

✨ When Grandma brings cookies, say “That was so kind of her!”

✨ When you feel thankful, say it out loud, “I love when you help me clean up!”

The more your child hears and feels gratitude, the more they’ll begin to express it on their own.

Don’t worry about prompting. Just model naturally, connect it to emotions, and let their understanding grow with time.

💛 What’s one moment today you can model gratitude for?

🎃 Speech Tip for Trick or Treating with Your Toddler 🍬

Help your little one feel confident and build language skills before the big night!

🏠 Practice at home with toys. Pretend to knock on the door, ring the doorbell, and say “trick or treat,” “thank you,” and “you’re welcome.”

📚 Read books about trick or treating and talk about what they might see like other kids in costumes, pumpkins, and fun decorations.

✨ Remember this is a new situation for many toddlers. If your child feels hesitant, stay close, model calm excitement, and praise their bravery as they take in all the sights and sounds.

Day in the life of a mom and speech therapist 🌛⭐️

Morning toddler get-ready and drop-off, then four back-to-back sessions at all different locations. The last one wrapped up at the office with a little paperwork before heading home for a late lunch on the couch.

Afternoon meant pick-up, a few errands, dinner and dessert with Dad, playtime, and then Daddy took over bath while Mommy cleaned up.

Busy, full, and fun — just the way I like it.
If any of the toys from today’s sessions caught your eye, you can find them here: Amazon Storefront

🍂 Favorite Fall Speech Activities 🍂

Here are some of my favorite ways to weave speech and language practice into everyday fall fun at home!

1. Dress up and pretend! Try on costumes or play with dress-up dolls. Target words like hat, boots, shirt, and build short phrases: “The firefighter drives the fire truck!” “The pirate says arghhhh matey!”

2. Make silly jack-o’-lantern faces. Talk about body parts, feelings, and sizes. “Should our pumpkin have a big mouth or a small one?” “He’s smiling! He feels happy!”

3. Play with holiday-themed toys. These build vocabulary your child will hear all season long. “Trick or treat!” “Ghost says boo!” “We got candy!”

4. Use in-and-out containers. Practice prepositions, counting, and choices. “Put it in!” “Take it out!” “Do you want a coin or a pom pom in your cauldron?”

5. Try a themed sensory bin. Scoop, pour, and dump to build verbs and imagination. “I’m hungry! Can I have some pumpkins in my cup?” “Yum, thank you!”

6. Read seasonal books. Reading fall stories introduces new words and ideas while keeping things cozy.

7. Get outside. Go on an “adventure” walk. Talk about what you see, collect leaves, or pretend sticks are fishing poles. The journey is the fun part!

🍁 Language learning should not look like work. It should look like play, imagination, and a little fall magic.
