December is Seasonal Affective Disorder Awareness Month, and the National Institute of Mental Health has free resources available to educate the public on signs, symptoms, treatment options and methods for prevention.
Seasonal affective disorder consists of emotional episodes or mood changes throughout short periods of time, usually changing with the seasons. The symptoms of anxiety, irritability, sleep and appetite changes, depression or more can last four to five months, often occurring in the winter, but can happen year around. These changes in daylight hours and lack of sunlight effect millions of Americans.
