👀Here's a behind-the-scenes look at our eye room in honor of this month! The eye care provided here is all thanks to generous donors, corporate partners, and private foundations who enable us to acquire equipment and resources to provide an exceptional care experience in a safe, private, and comfortable environment! And, of course, we couldn't do it without our dedicated volunteers.

Today is 👀🌎 It’s a global awareness day highlighting the need for accessible, available, and affordable eyecare. We’re celebrating this day to give you a deeper understanding of the impact that providing eye care has on our community.

The Wisconsin Council of the Blind & Visually Impaired reports that over 109,000 Wisconsinites are blind or have low vision. That number represents about 4.2% of older adults in the state who are visually impaired.

So, what is Specialty Care Free Clinic doing to help? We’re offering 100% free optometry and ophthalmology appointments for uninsured patients this month, just like we do throughout the year, and have over the past 25 years! Later this month, we’ll have 17 individual patients coming in for eye appointments. Special thanks to our eyecare provider volunteers: Dr. McCanna, Dr. Lee, Dr. Kornaus, Dr. Bardenwerper, Dr. Harkins, Dr. Sramek, Dr. Barney, Dr. Castrovinci, and Dr. Lucchese!

Do you know the difference between optometry and ophthalmology ⁉️⁉️

In preparation for this Thursday’s , here’s a quick breakdown of two eye services our volunteers provide patients…

🟣Optometrists = Perform eye exams and vision tests, prescribe and dispense corrective lenses, detect eye abnormalities, and prescribe medications for eye diseases
🟣Ophthalmologists = Perform eye exams and vision tests, provide eyeglasses or contacts, prescribe medications for eye diseases, as well as perform surgeries to correct vision problems, and operate to treat disorders like cataracts, diabetic retinopathy, and glaucoma

Stay tuned for this Thursday, and share this post with a friend to build awareness of Specialty Care Free Clinic.

BSP Free Clinic

The BSP Free Clinic is the only clinic in our area dedicated to providing quality, specialty health care by volunteer professionals to adults without insurance. Our volunteer physicians and ancillary practitioners provide direct health care services in a variety of medical specialties such as cardiology, gynecology, gastroenterology, ophthalmology, rheumatology, endocrinology, nephrology, etc. These services aid in the diagnosis and treatment of low-income persons who are uninsured. BSP receives referrals from primary care clinics throughout the state of WI.

Patients must get a referral from a primary care provider to be seen at the BSP Free Clinic. We see patients who have no insurance and who are 250% of the Federal Poverty Level.

The clinic is a 501(c)(3) organization.
