Northshore Car Seat Mom

Northshore Car Seat Mom Feel free to post or DM with any questions! My passion with car seat safety started in 2016 as we prepared for the birth of our first son.

I am Certified Passenger Safety Technician (CPST) and member of the Louisiana Passenger Safety Taskforce primarily servicing the Northshore community in Southeast LA. My name is Jourdan and I am Certified Passenger Safety Technician (CPST) and member of the Louisiana Passenger Safety Taskforce primarily servicing the Northshore community in Southeast LA. Since then, it has been a goal of mine to become a CPST. My dream became a reality in early 2022 when I was given an opportunity to attend a 3 day Certified Passenger Safety Technician course followed by a community car seat fitting station event. I am nationally certified through Safe Kids Worldwide. My goal is to educate, inspire, and encourage proper child restraint use. Please feel free to post on this page or privately contact me with any questions or if you are interested in a free seat check. Getting your car seat checked is more than a CPST looking at it and doing it for you. My goal is to ensure you are confident installing your seat and troubleshooting issues that may arise. We will also discuss best practice, state laws, types of seats and progression of seats. If we are unable to arrange a time to meet or you are not local to me, I can help connect you to another CPST or fitting station in your area! I work as a speech language pathologist in both the medical and school setting. Being a CPST is something I do on the side for no charge so please be patient with me responding to messages/questions! I look forward to making a difference in the community.

IMPORTANT - Several social media sites are quoting a "new child passenger safety law" in Louisiana. The sites quote the same law that has been in effect since 2019. Nothing new folks! I've been getting a lot of questions lately regarding transition from booster to vehicle seatbelt without booster as well as age to ride in the front seat.

The Louisiana Child Passenger Safety Law states the child must be 9 years old or has outgrown the booster seat AND can pass the 5-step test before progressing to using the lap and shoulder belt with the vehicle seat. Your child must be 13 to ride in the front seat.

Boosters raise and position a child so the vehicle’s lap-and-shoulder belt fits properly over the stronger points of a child’s body, the hips and across the chest. You can cause serious internal injury or even death when a child is not adequately positioned in a vehicle seat belt.

5-Step Test - Can they:
1) Sit with their back against the vehicle seat AND
2) Knees bent at the edge of the seat (feet on ground) AND
3) Lap belt on top of thighs and NOT belly AND
4) Shoulder belt between neck and shoulder NOT touching the neck AND
5) Can sit properly with no slouching/playing with seatbelt*

🔺🔺 The picture on the left is NOT okay and absolutely NOT safe.

Just a friendly reminder that your child should be in a belt positioning booster seat (high back booster or backless with a vehicle headrest) until they can pass the 5 step test.

1) Back against the vehicle seat
2) Knees bend at the edge of the seat
3) Lap belt on top of thighs and NOT belly
4) Shoulder belt between neck and shoulder NOT touching the neck
5) Can sit properly with no slouching/playing with seatbelt

Boosters raise and position a child so the vehicle’s lap-and-shoulder belt fits properly over the stronger points of a child’s body, the hips and across the chest. You can cause serious injury or even death when a child is not adequately positioned in a vehicle seat belt.

Your child should also not be in one of these seats until they max out the height or weight of their 5 point harness (most go to 49” and/or 65lbs) but that’s another post for another day 😊

I had such a great time educating over 200 pre-k and kindergarten students at Abney Early Childhood Center on the importance of being properly restrained/secure in moving vehicles and age/requirements to legally sit in the front seat! It was a different audience than I am used to but it was so fulfilling knowing I was able to reach so many of them! I do this because I want to save lives…and save parents the heartache 💚

This is why I do this! Two car seats are back on the road safe as can be ☺️

I encountered a few challenges that relied on both what the car and car seat manufacture allows but I love a good challenge. I do this because I love it and want to maximize every child’s chance to be safe in the event of an accident.
