National Maternal Health Awareness Day is January 23, 2026, and a moment for Tennessee to pause, remember, and recommit. It honors the mothers we have lost, recognizes the families impacted, and reinforces the urgent need to prevent maternal deaths and severe complications.

It is an important and hope-filled day—one that highlights both the challenges we face and the progress within reach. It reminds us that lasting improvement depends on listening to mothers, learning from lived experience, and strengthening collaboration across public health, healthcare, and community partners statewide.

Together, these efforts help build safer systems of care before, during, and after pregnancy. When we act with intention and shared responsibility, we move closer to a Tennessee where every mother has the chance to thrive.

We’re working with the Monroe County Prevention & Wellness Coalition to provide trainings for the community that will equip people with the tools and knowledge that may be beneficial in preventing or intervening when mental health struggles negatively impact the life of our youth. In December a Youth Mental Health First Aid training was offered and this month Monroe County Schools initiated phase 1 of a 2-phase training for counselors and nurses to complete ASIST training. We recognize the needs, and are hopeful to help. 988 is always a resource, if someone needs to talk. You can call or chat any day, any time.

The 2025 Tennessee State of the Child Report shows a trend in declining mental health for 12 to 17-year-olds.
