It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of William Whitney Curtis III, 85, who passed away peacefully on Wednesday, April 15, 2026, at his home surrounded by family. Despite his long battle with heart disease and COPD, Whitney's unwavering sense of humor remained intact until the end. He had a remarkable ability to bring laughter to those around him, often entertaining others with his jokes and silly antics, especially with children. Whitney had the gift of storytelling, although his mischievous nature usually left his family wondering whether his tales were entirely true.
He was born on October 23, 1940, in Madisonville, Kentucky, Whitney was the only child of William Whitney Curtis II and Neal Curtis Brown. He proudly served his country as a drill sergeant in the US Army's 100th Infantry Training Division. In September 1961, mere days before reporting to active duty at Ft. Chaffe, AR, Whitney married his high school sweetheart, the love of his life, Pat Campbell Curtis.
Whitney was a Mason and former Shriner at the Rizpah Temple. He was an avid outdoorsman. Whether riding a motorcycle, hunting small game, trap shooting, playing golf, or indulging in his favorite pastime of fishing, he found solace in the great outdoors. For him, a day spent on the lake, regardless of the catch, was a good day. He also firmly believed that there was no such thing as a bad dog and every person should have at least one.
In addition to his parents, Whitney was preceded in death by his beloved wife Pat Curtis; son, Robert Curtis; and great-grandson, Andrew Curtis.
He is survived by his sons, Richard (Darla) Curtis and Whitney (Sarah) Curtis IV; daughter, Elizabeth Ann (Bill) Bisceglia, ten grandchildren, and seventeen great-grandchildren.
Graveside services will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Saturday, April 25, 2026, at Odd Fellows Cemetery in Madisonville, KY, with Rev. Jessie Campbell officiating and music will be provided by Katie and Chris Stotts. Military honors will be conducted by the United States Army and the Hopkins County Honor Guard. Harris Funeral Home assisted the family.
