About a month ago, my wife and I were riding past this old shooting house that is no longer used and saw this buzzard sitting on two eggs. There was no nest just two eggs sitting there on top of the leaves. I told my wife it would be hard to believe those eggs could sit there for a month without something getting them. She and/or I have driven by this spot about once a week and the buzzard would just fly up in a tree and watch us go by as we slowed down and looked at the eggs. Today I went by on the way to burn and there they were. You could tell one had hatched earlier and the other had just hatched. Now some might say it’s just a dang buzzard, but I never get tired of nature amazing me.

This isn’t the prettiest of clover fields, but last fall you would have given up on it. The entire field was solid brown from months of extreme drought. The root system was still alive and in a state of dormancy, just waiting for some cooler temperatures and rainfall. That rainfall finally came in November and all of this growth has taken place in the past couple months. Moral of the story is if you know your crop and how it reacts in a drought, give it a chance.

Another block where a March fire cleaned up the understory hardwood encroachment and a wet drain right through the middle will create diversity.

Congratulations Noah on your first gobbler. Noah attended my seminar several years ago and I gave him this shed antler. I love seeing the younger generation out there getting it done. They are the future of wildlife management and hunting.

Awnless wheat heading out and will be a food source for both deer and turkeys. Deer are already utilizing the heads. It will then be put into a summer food source.

I love getting these messages when a seminar attendant has success with their very first attempt at a clover plot. Heck, it looks as good as mine! What’s even better is knowing there’s now someone else out there improving habitat.

Back about 60 - 70 years ago my grandfather made these knives in his basement. They were made not for show, but for use. At the very bottom are his fish scalers made from Coke bottle caps. I proudly display them in my man cave.

This is why I burn in March and not February. If I’m going to use up a fuel source, it’s going to do habitat work for me.

Another field after two consecutive years of extreme drought and still in a D1 drought. You can also tell by the weeds there was a recent herbicide application.

Two consecutive years of extreme drought and still in a D1 drought. Not one ounce of additional seed applied last fall. This is a mix of two different white clovers.

You might have seen this 26 year-old logger come on my page yesterday and make the comment that landowners were “rich pr—s”. Pretty stupid for someone who needs landowners for the business they are in. I was going to call him out and the company he works with, but then I thought about it and said why lower myself to his level. He and his friends are now blocked from my page and he’s probably not smart enough to understand it, but I did him and his company a favor. Would you want him cutting timber on your property? I’ve said this before and I’ll say it again. If you come on my page and attack my clients, my friends, my family or my business I will pack your bags for you and send you on down the road.
