Carthamus Tinctorius, more commonly known as Saffron or Safflower
Seeds, are native to Egypt, the Middle East, and India. They were originally dried and used to pain carthamin, used as a textile red dye until it was replaced by synthetic dyes. The plant spread further east, reaching China and Japan. In 1925, the US experimented with the plant as an oil. California then commercialized it in the 1950s. Safflower has been used as an adulterant of the condiment saffron.
The seeds are slightly bitter and look like orange seeds. They have a high linoleic acid content, and their protein content can be anywhere
from 25-55% when compressed into a cake or meal.
The linoleum acid in safflower seeds help lower cholesterol, and reduce risk of heart disease. It also contains chemicals that thin the blood to prevent blood clots, widen blood vessels, lower blood pressure and stimulate the heart.
Safflower seeds are good for constipation, sexual debility, asthma, eczema, and other female disorders. Those with cardiovascular diseases would benefit much from the linoleic acid of the safflower. As a safe rule, having safflower oil instead of butter and cream will greatly enhance one's health. These seeds are also rich in many minerals and vitamins, such as thiamine, pyridoxine, folate, magnesium, phosphorus, vitamin B1, B6 and B9.
This herb was initially recorded in Shen Nong Ben Cao Jing (Shen Nong’s Herbal Classic). It is widely cultivated outside of Northeast China and the best is produced in Wuzhi County, Jiaozuo city, Henan Province. The plant is a species of the plant in the amaranthaceae family and is native to tropical regions of Asia as well as India. The plant is also widespread in Baluchistan, Ceylon, Tropical Asia, Africa, Australia and America. The root of the plant is used in Korea to treat oedema, rheumatism, delayed me**es and as a contraceptive and abortifacient. The root contains triterpenoid saponins and has been shown to have analgesic, antiallergic, anti-inflammatory, antispasmodic, diuretic, hypotensive and uterine stimulant properties. In addition, it contains protocatechuic acid, which has antioxidant properties, and also inhibits the aggregation of platelets
It is characterized as stout, bright, and oily. Mature plants have extensive root systems supporting multiple stems. Chaff flower begins growing in late spring and flowers in late July. The leaves are simple, opposite, and the “arcing” venation is very similar to that of dogwood leaves. Stems and leaves are smooth to slightly fuzzy. Seedlings have red stems. Some of this red tint persists in the stems as the plants grow, particularly at the branch nodes.
It is a powerful healing agent that is widely used in ayurvedic medicine in India. It is a very important herbal remedy around the world. The medicinal properties are due to the chemicals present in the chaff flower. This includes triterpenoid saponins and long-chain alcohols. The taste is bitter and pungent and stimulates the digestive fire. Some health benefits include relieving nausea, healing wounds, helping with asthma, weight loss, detoxifying, itch relief, dental care, controls hunger, cures infections, treats ear pain, treats anemia, relieves gases, and so many others.
Eucommia is an herb that comes from the Chinese rubber tree (Eucommia ulmoides). It has been used for centuries in traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) to support the endocrine system, improve kidney health, and strengthen bones and muscles. It is also said to promote weight loss, prevent osteoporosis, and enhance heart health.
While alternative medicine practitioners turn to eucommia to increase vitality and promote longevity, in the West, it is mostly known as a supplement to lower blood pressure. In addition to capsules, eucommia is also sold in extract, tea, and dry forms.
The herb, also known as du zhong, is a rich source of antioxidants, lignans, and isoflavonoids—naturally occurring chemicals with hormone-like effects.
Eucommia has been used and studied for a variety of uses including sexual dysfunction, cancer, metabolic syndrome, neurological diseases, and more.
