Important Update for NJ Families!

The State of New Jersey has passed new legislation to educate public school parents about Type 1 Diabetes (T1D) and autoantibody screenings. Early identification is key to reducing life-threatening complications, and now families have better access to critical information.

The Diabetes Foundation has created a flyer, vetted by the New Jersey Department of Health and the Governor’s office, which is now available (in both English and Spanish) in schools and on the New Jersey Department of Education website.

It covers:
✅ What T1D is and how it affects the body
✅ Risk factors and early symptoms
✅ Screening options, including free at-home kits
✅ Guidance for managing diabetes at school

Early awareness saves lives. Share the flyer with parents and caregivers—knowledge is the first step in protecting our children: https://bit.ly/4pkgLF5

Knowing the different types of Diabetes is the first step to staying healthy.

✔️ Type 1 diabetes happens when the body makes little or no insulin, so sugar from food stays in your blood instead of going into your cells.
✔️ Type 2 diabetes happens when insulin is made, but your cells don’t accept it properly, so sugar stays in your blood.
✔️ Prediabetes is when blood sugar is higher than normal but not high enough to be type 2 diabetes—it’s a sign that type 2 may develop.
✔️ Gestational diabetes happens during pregnancy when cells don’t accept insulin, causing sugar to stay in the blood. It usually goes away after the baby is born.

This Diabetes Awareness Month, join our Sugar Check Challenge! Learn about your risk, understand your numbers, and take steps to stay healthy. Ask your doctor for an A1C test, or call 📞 the Diabetes Foundation at 201-444-0337 for help finding a free local resource for blood sugar testing.

We’re proud to share that the Diabetes Foundation’s National Diabetes Awareness Month kickoff event at Dwight Morrow High School in Englewood was featured on News 12 New Jersey! 🎥

Hundreds of students came together to learn about healthy habits, nutrition, and the importance of prevention. As Executive Director, Ginine Cilenti shared, “Education is one way we get the word out to young people.”

📊 News 12 reports that more than 10% of New Jersey residents live with diabetes, and 34% have prediabetes — a powerful reminder of why awareness and action matter.

This month and beyond, let’s continue to reflect, take action, and invest in health for all. Help us spread the word: share this post, tag someone who should see it, and keep the conversation going.
