It’s Mental Health Awareness Week.

If you’re feeling stressed, overwhelmed, or overthinking something, it can be difficult to think clearly and be productive.

It’s important to slow down and focus on your breathing.

Let’s take a moment to allow yourself to let go of your worries and settle your mind.

I invite you to stop whatever you are doing and be present in this moment by practicing this simple breathing exercise.

It’s October and it’s Breast Cancer Awareness Month. Please join us every Friday of this month by wearing as much pink as you can in support of those who have fought, are still fighting, and who have survived.

Screening and early detection is so important, especially for women 40 and up and men (yes, men) who have a BRCA2 or BRCA1 inherited gene mutation.

Every 40 seconds, someone loses their life to su***de. It’s time to raise awareness and recognize our role to prevent it. If you know someone who is struggling emotionally or having a hard time, ask them about how they are feeling, listen without judgment, and encourage them to seek help.

If they are talking or behaving in a way that makes you think that they might attempt su***de (e.g, they are talking about ending their life, they have a plan, they have the means to end their own life, such as a gun or stockpile of pills), don’t try to handle the situation alone. Seek immediate help from a trained professional as soon as possible. Encourage the person to call the National Su***de Prevention Lifeline at 800-273-TALK (800-273-8255) to reach a trained counselor. Use that same number and press "1" to reach the Veterans Crisis Line. Or call your local mobile crisis team. For the local mobile crisis in North Carolina for your county, visit www.crisissolutionsnc.org. The average response time can take up to 2 hours before a trained mobile crisis team member can get out to the person so if he/she is having a life threatening emergency, call 911 or take them to your nearest hospital emergency department.

Guiding Light Counseling, PLLC is pleased to introduce our therapist and owner, Sylvia Vang, LCSW.

Sylvia Vang earned her Master in Social Work from UNC-Charlotte in 2014. She started her career in 2014 providing mental health services as a Behavioral Health Provider in a primary care setting working alongside some very awesome medical and psychiatric providers providing quality care for families residing in Catawba and Lincoln County.

In 2016, Sylvia completed the mandatory clinical and supervision hours needed to obtain licensure. She developed a passion for working with young and middle-aged adults who were feeling disconnected, lost, inadequate, and constantly overthinking to a point where it was unhealthy. Having an unhappy childhood (adverse childhood experiences), distressing life events, unhealthy relationships, past traumas, or unresolved recent events seemed to be a common theme among the root cause of their emotions, behaviors, and thinking.

Sylvia became intrigued and wanted to learn more in order to help them find the relief they needed in order to start healing and manage their symptoms. This guided her to engage in trauma informed trainings and to complete an EMDRIA approved training program in EMDR therapy in 2018 which included 40 hours of in-person training and consultation. She began utilizing EMDR in the office with her patients and witnessed the effectiveness of this psychotherapy method in treating those who suffer from trauma and other distressing life experiences, including PTSD, anxiety, depression, panic disorders, nightmares, and grief/loss.

In 2021, Sylvia made the decision to open her own private practice to provide online therapy services to adults residing in North Carolina. She utilizes CBT, EMDR, and/or other modalities to help her clients achieve their goals. Sessions are tailored according to individual needs and preferences. Sylvia is also fluent in Hmong.
