Guiding Light Counseling, PLLC is pleased to introduce our therapist and owner, Sylvia Vang, LCSW.
Sylvia Vang earned her Master in Social Work from UNC-Charlotte in 2014. She started her career in 2014 providing mental health services as a Behavioral Health Provider in a primary care setting working alongside some very awesome medical and psychiatric providers providing quality care for families residing in Catawba and Lincoln County.
In 2016, Sylvia completed the mandatory clinical and supervision hours needed to obtain licensure. She developed a passion for working with young and middle-aged adults who were feeling disconnected, lost, inadequate, and constantly overthinking to a point where it was unhealthy. Having an unhappy childhood (adverse childhood experiences), distressing life events, unhealthy relationships, past traumas, or unresolved recent events seemed to be a common theme among the root cause of their emotions, behaviors, and thinking.
Sylvia became intrigued and wanted to learn more in order to help them find the relief they needed in order to start healing and manage their symptoms. This guided her to engage in trauma informed trainings and to complete an EMDRIA approved training program in EMDR therapy in 2018 which included 40 hours of in-person training and consultation. She began utilizing EMDR in the office with her patients and witnessed the effectiveness of this psychotherapy method in treating those who suffer from trauma and other distressing life experiences, including PTSD, anxiety, depression, panic disorders, nightmares, and grief/loss.
In 2021, Sylvia made the decision to open her own private practice to provide online therapy services to adults residing in North Carolina. She utilizes CBT, EMDR, and/or other modalities to help her clients achieve their goals. Sessions are tailored according to individual needs and preferences. Sylvia is also fluent in Hmong.
