🧠 Healthy Brain SEEDSS: Exercise 🏃‍♀️

Exercise isn’t just good for your body—it’s powerful medicine for your brain.

Decades of neuroscience research show that regular, moderate aerobic exercise (like brisk walking) supports brain health across the lifespan by:

✔️ Increasing BDNF (brain-derived neurotrophic factor), a key protein that supports neuroplasticity
✔️ Promoting the growth of new brain cells and blood vessels
✔️ Improving memory, attention, and processing speed
✔️ Reducing depression, anxiety, and stress
✔️ Enhancing sleep quality, which is essential for cognition
✔️ Slowing age-related cognitive decline

Exercise supports brain function both directly (through neuroplasticity and blood flow) and indirectly by improving mood, sleep, and stress regulation—three major drivers of cognitive health.

🕒 Goal: Aim for ~150 minutes per week (that’s only 30 minutes 5 times per week) of moderate, heart-pumping activity (like brisk walking). Small, consistent movement truly adds up.

At Bigger Skies Mental Health, we believe that brain health is shaped by daily habits—not just medications or therapy alone. Decades of neuroscience research show that lifestyle factors play a powerful role in mood regulation, cognitive functioning, resilience, and long-term mental health.

The first of our 6 Healthy Brain SEEDSS:
Social Connection

Human brains are wired for connection. Strong social relationships are consistently linked with longer life expectancy, improved mood, and sharper cognitive functioning. Conversely, isolation and loneliness are associated with higher rates of depression, illness, and cognitive decline.

Regular social interaction—whether through meaningful conversations, shared activities, or family time—has been shown to:
• Reduce stress and improve self-esteem
• Support healthier sleep, nutrition, and activity patterns
• Slow cognitive decline and memory loss
• Lower the risk of Alzheimer’s disease and other dementias

We’re excited to introduce Chelsea, a board-certified Psychiatric Mental Health Nurse Practitioner now seeing medication management patients in Ohio.

Chelsea brings extensive experience and a thoughtful, compassionate approach to care. She is currently accepting adult patients via telehealth, with availability starting as early as this week.
