This sweet 12-year-old dachshund named Peaches came to us not feeling her usual spunky self. She was lethargic, not eating, and had a fever that just wouldn’t quit. After a thorough workup and imaging, our team discovered a gallbladder mucocele — a serious condition that was already leaking bile and causing secondary pancreatitis.

Peaches underwent emergency surgery by Dr. Kelsey Cappelle to remove her gallbladder and stop the spread of infection. During surgery, our team also discovered and removed a large gallstone and took liver biopsies to rule out other concerns.

We're thrilled to share that Peaches is now bright, eating well, and on the mend! She's resting comfortably and getting lots of love from Dr. Lindsey Jett and our Critical Care team. While she’ll need some follow-up care and monitoring for her kidneys and heart, Peaches has shown just how tough she really is.

We’re so proud of this little lady and grateful her family acted quickly. Early intervention saved her life!

Thankful Tuesday 🧡 Take a look at a pet owner's recent experience with us at VRC!

"I'm reaching out to express sincere gratitude to Dr. Kristen Bartholomew and her team for the thorough treatment of Linguini Tekely on July 4. Linguini was referred to VRC after a bladder stone blockage occurred over the summer.

Linguini has experienced chronic bladder issues, including several blockages that led to PU surgery about two years ago. Then, about a year ago, we discovered bladder stones, which caused him to need another bladder surgery last year for the stones. Ling had been seeing our primary vet regularly for bladder stone rechecks and still continued to suffer with a lot of sediment and bladder stones despite him being on the proper vet diet for his struvite stones.

Dr. Bartholomew spent at least half hour discussing Linguini's history and sharing advice on what we could do for him since we've done all the necessary adjustments that should be working for him. One of her recommendations was to try a behavioral health medication like Prozac to see if that would reduce the stones. She also provided another experimental option of radiology that could also help his condition.

Determined to help Linguini, we decided that Prozac would be a good choice to try to see if that would help to improve the stones and sediment in his bladder. We immediately asked his vet to start him on Prozac, which he's been taking since the beginning of July.

We went back to his primary vet last week to x-ray his bladder to see if there were any improvements. We were so completely floored when we saw that his bladder had no signs of stones or sediment. The Prozac has truly changed Linguini's life and we can't begin to thank Dr. Bartholomew and her team enough for helping to change his life.

Thank you Dr. Bartholomew and VRC Team!" - Tekely Family

Chubbs was seen by Dr. Justin Guinan of our Internal Medicine service at VRC Malvern for help managing recurring urinary issues that have been troubling him on and off for the past 18 months.

Chubbs has a long history, including a Perineal Urethrostomy (PU) surgery done years ago to help prevent urinary blockages. While he did well for many years, his family recently noticed symptoms returning — frequent trips to the litter box, accidents outside of it, and signs of discomfort.

After thorough testing and review, our team suspects Feline Interstitial Cystitis (FIC) — a frustrating, chronic condition that causes painful bladder flare-ups, but isn’t caused by infection or stones. This condition can be stressful for both pets and owners, but with the right management plan, many cats can live comfortably.

We’re so proud of Chubbs and his family for being proactive and dedicated to his care. 💙

If your cat is showing urinary changes — straining, frequent litter box trips, or accidents — don’t wait. These signs could indicate a range of issues that are best caught early.

This is Ellie, a sweet 6-year-old greyhound who recently faced the unimaginable. Earlier this week, Ellie managed to slip out of her fenced yard and was struck by a slow-moving truck. Thankfully, the driver stopped and helped get her immediate care at a local ER.

She was quickly stabilized and transferred to us at VRC for further evaluation, where she was seen by Dr. D’Lauro of our ER department.

Unfortunately, her injuries were significant—a severe open fracture of her left tibia and fibula, along with extensive soft tissue damage. After evaluating all options and prioritizing her comfort and quality of life, Dr. Jason Coggeshall, of our surgical team performed a hind limb amputation.

Just three days after surgery, Ellie is already up on her own, walking on three legs, and showing us just how tough and resilient she really is. We’ve managed her pain closely (including some phantom limb discomfort), and she’s now resting comfortably, eating again, and ready to head home to her loving family.

Ellie’s strength is matched only by the love and commitment of her family—who’ve been by her side every step of the way. We're proud to have played a role in her recovery and can’t wait to see her thriving in the months to come.

Please send Ellie all your healing vibes as she continues to recover at home.

Meet Fish, a sweet 6-year-old Swedish Vallhund who came to our ER team at VRC after a very rough morning of vomiting and not feeling herself. Her family—also veterinarians—knew something wasn’t right.

After a thorough workup, including bloodwork and ultrasound, we were concerned about a possible foreign body obstruction (FBO) — potentially something lodged in her GI tract. Given the imaging findings and her ongoing symptoms, she was taken to surgery for an exploratory laparotomy.

Surgery showed no clear foreign object, though we did find some abnormal intestinal contents that could’ve been fabric or just dense material. Fish recovered well overnight and began eating breakfast the next morning — a great sign!

But the mystery was finally solved at home...

Fish later passed a Nutcracker-themed cat toy, likely the culprit! Her family had no idea she’d gotten into it while they were away.

We’re so glad to report that Fish is home, happy, and healing beautifully, thanks to quick action from her family and the dedication of our emergency, surgery, and critical care teams. Moral of the story: Even the sneakiest dogs can get into trouble — and the smallest toys can cause big problems!

Maddie Rose recently underwent surgery at VRC to remove a limbal melanoma in her right eye. This growth had been noticed last October, and while it’s benign, these types of tumors can become large enough to affect vision — so we knew it was time to take action.

Thanks to Dr. Badanes and the amazing ophthalmology team, Maddie had a successful procedure that included surgical debulking of the mass, cryotherapy, and placement of an ACell graft to help her heal. We're so relieved to share that the melanoma didn’t extend deeper into the eye, and her vision is currently doing well! Her prognosis is good, and she’s recovering comfortably at home with lots of snuggles, treats, and love.

Every day at VRC we witness the strength and resilience of pets in our care, and the warmth and compassion of their owners. We are often inspired and encouraged by their determination to overcome whatever life throws at them. These pets tug at our hearts and we carry their stories with us. This is why we formed a special Pet Hall of Fame - to honor these special pets. While all pets that come through our doors touch our hearts, there are some that directly and profoundly impact our lives and inspire us with their brave stories. Shared in this album are a few special pets nominated by our own VRC staff members that visited our hospital in the past year.

With your help, one of these pets will be inducted into our 2025 Pet Hall of Fame! Simply “like” the photo of the story that felt inspirational to you. You can vote for as many stories you want. Voting is NOW OPEN through Monday, December 8th. The winner and newest inductee will be announced Friday, December 12th.
