When Stewie, a sweet 7-year-old Dachshund, first came to us back in 2021, his world had suddenly changed. After a painful episode at home, he was struggling to move comfortably, and despite medications and rest, his pain only worsened. Advanced imaging confirmed a cervical intervertebral disc extrusion, and Stewie underwent surgery to help relieve the pressure on his spine.

With time, dedicated care, and the help of ongoing acupuncture and rehabilitation, Stewie bounced back—returning to his happy, playful self.

Fast forward to 2025, now 11 years young, Stewie faced another setback. His family noticed stiffness, a lowered head, and eventually difficulty walking. Given his history, they acted quickly, and our neurology team stepped in. Stewie underwent another surgery to address a new disc issue in his neck.

And just like before—he showed us what resilience really looks like. Within weeks, Stewie was more comfortable, regaining mobility, and by his one-month recheck, he was back to doing what he loves most: enjoying life at home with his family.

But Stewie’s journey didn’t stop there. Later that year, he bravely tackled an episode of pancreatitis and even a newly discovered splenic mass. With close monitoring and supportive care, he continued to fight forward with the same determination we’ve come to admire.

Most recently, at 12 years old, Stewie returned to us for early signs of another pancreatitis flare. Thanks to his family recognizing the signs quickly and seeking care right away, we were able to intervene early and keep him comfortable.

Meet Pete, a sweet 9‑year‑old Pitbull mix who recently faced one of the toughest challenges of his life. After having a mast cell tumor removed, Pete developed severe complications that led to infected, dehisced surgical incisions. His family rushed him to VRC, worried, exhausted, and desperately wanting him to feel better.

Over the next six days, Pete’s care team worked around the clock—managing infection, performing multiple wound repairs, monitoring lab work, controlling discomfort, and supporting him through each small step forward. From daily bandage changes to wound revisions and careful monitoring of his bilirubin, blood pressure, appetite, and healing, Pete proved to be a fighter from start to finish.
But it wasn’t just medical care that got him through—it was the love behind him.

His family sent us this message after he finally started turning the corner:

“Pete is doing so much better than when he first came in to VRC! We are so grateful for the staff’s expertise in caring for him for the 6 days he was hospitalized. We were updated multiple times a day on how he was doing, and we truly felt that the staff cared about him almost as much as we do! What was a tough patch for Pete and our family was made easier by the care & consideration offered by VRC. One of Pete’s favorite things to do is go on hikes, and when he was so sick I promised him if he kept fighting & got better that we had so many spring hikes ahead of us! We are looking forward to keeping that promise thanks to VRC!”

Today, Pete is back on his paws—eating, healing, and getting closer to those spring hikes every day. 🌱❤️

We’re honored to have been part of his journey and so proud of the resilience this boy has shown. Here’s to brighter days ahead, Pete!

🐾 Pet First Aid Awareness Month 🐾

Did you know that having a well-stocked pet first aid kit can make all the difference in an emergency? At VRC, we know how quickly accidents and sudden health issues can arise for our furry friends. That’s why Pet First Aid Awareness Month is so important!

Here’s what every pet owner should include in their kit:

Bandages and gauze
Cloth tape
Tweezers for splinters or ticks
Antiseptic wipes or ointment
Scissors (for cutting tape or gauze)
Digital thermometer (for checking your pet’s temperature)
Latex gloves
Towels and a blanket
Your vet’s contact information
Your pet's vaccine and medical records

🩺 Pro Tip: Always check your kit regularly to ensure supplies are up-to-date!

Having these essentials on hand can help you respond quickly to injuries or health concerns and can be life-saving in critical situations. At our hospital, we’re here evenings, weekends, and holidays, but being prepared at home can make a big difference until you can get to us.

Stay safe and keep your furry friends healthy! 💙🐶🐱

Bryn, a 2-year-old Springer Spaniel, came to our ER after developing a persistent hacking cough shortly after boarding and attending doggy daycare.

Although he initially improved with treatment from his regular veterinarian, the cough returned and became more frequent—sometimes even causing him to retch after coughing.

During his visit with ER doctor Dr. Karen D’Lauro, Bryn’s lungs sounded clear, but his trachea (windpipe) was very sensitive and triggered coughing during the exam.

Because kennel cough and other respiratory infections can linger and cause airway inflammation, Bryn’s treatment plan was adjusted with a new antibiotic while continuing medication to help reduce inflammation.

The good news: most dogs recover well with treatment, and Bryn is on the right track to feeling better. 🐾💙
