Bryn, a 2-year-old Springer Spaniel, came to our ER after developing a persistent hacking cough shortly after boarding and attending doggy daycare.

Although he initially improved with treatment from his regular veterinarian, the cough returned and became more frequent—sometimes even causing him to retch after coughing.

During his visit with ER doctor Dr. Karen D’Lauro, Bryn’s lungs sounded clear, but his trachea (windpipe) was very sensitive and triggered coughing during the exam.

Because kennel cough and other respiratory infections can linger and cause airway inflammation, Bryn’s treatment plan was adjusted with a new antibiotic while continuing medication to help reduce inflammation.

The good news: most dogs recover well with treatment, and Bryn is on the right track to feeling better. 🐾💙

Meet Simon!

Simon, a 13-year-old Schnauzer mix, has been seeing our ophthalmology team for several years to help manage uveitis (inflammation inside the eye) and secondary glaucoma. While these conditions can affect both comfort and vision, careful monitoring and treatment can help pets continue to live happy, comfortable lives.

Simon recently returned for a recheck with Dr. Zachary Badanes, and we’re happy to share some good news:
✔️ His eye pressures are controlled
✔️ Inflammation is stable
✔️ His eyes are comfortable

Simon does have some vision changes from past inflammation, but thanks to his dedicated family, and his stylish doggy goggles, he’s still enjoying life and staying comfortable. 🐾

Two-month-old Beauregard, a sweet Mastiff puppy, came to see our Neurology team after his family noticed sudden back pain and weakness in his hind legs just days after coming home. He cried out in pain, struggled with stairs, and wasn’t his playful self. On exam with our neurologist, Dr. Suzanne Rosen, he was bright and alert but had significant pain in his lower back, hind limb weakness, and muscle loss along his back legs. Given how uncomfortable he was, we moved quickly to advanced imaging to find answers.

An MRI revealed a serious infection in the L6–L7 disc space causing instability in his lower spine. Beauregard has started on long-term antibiotics, along with pain control, and will need strict rest while his body heals. The good news? Puppies have an incredible ability to recover, and with time, medication, and careful monitoring, many can stabilize without surgery. Beauregard has a long road ahead, but he has a dedicated family and medical team supporting him every step of the way.

After his last recheck, we are happy to report that Beauregard is doing fantastic at home. His mom Tracy says, "Thank you, VRC, and a special shout out to Dr. Rosen for helping us figure out what was wrong with our pup and helping him feel better!"

Eight-month-old Kewpie came to our Emergency Service after several days of vomiting that progressed to five episodes in one day, along with a decreased appetite. While she was still bright and alert, her family was understandably concerned, especially after she vomited bile with small specks of blood. Dr. Liz Jarvie and our team performed a full physical exam, in-house bloodwork, and ultrasound screening to look for signs of obstruction, infection, or other serious illness.

The good news: no fluid buildup or obvious abnormalities were found, and her diagnostics suggested mild dehydration from the vomiting. Kewpie received subcutaneous fluids and an anti-nausea injection to help settle her stomach before heading home for monitoring. We’re happy to report she was comfortable at discharge, with instructions to recheck if vomiting or appetite concerns continued. Sometimes supportive care and close observation are exactly what a young patient needs.
