Nutrition Tip #3 from Dietitian Casey Michel – Include Fermented Foods

Support your gut and overall health by adding fermented foods to your routine. These foods contain probiotics—live microorganisms that can benefit your health when consumed in adequate amounts.

Research shows probiotics may help support:
• Gut health
• Mental health & mood
• Sleep
• Reduced inflammation
• Hormone balance
• Urogenital health
• Glucose control and more

Fermented foods to try:
• Yogurt
• Kimchi
• Kefir
• Unpasteurized sauerkraut
• Kombucha
• Miso
• Fermented vegetables

Considering a probiotic supplement? Look for:
• Billions of CFUs (colony-forming units)
• Multiple strains of beneficial bacteria
• A strain targeted to your specific health need

Small additions can make a big difference for your gut health!

If you’re 45 or older, your colon just sent you a reminder.

It’s time to schedule your colonoscopy screening.

Colon cancer often starts without symptoms, but screening can find and remove precancerous polyps before they turn into cancer. That’s prevention in action.

Don’t wait for symptoms.
Screening = prevention.

Call or text us at (760) 924-4014 to schedule an appointment.

Nutrition Tip #2 from Dietitian Casey Michel, MS, RD – Eat Small, Frequent Meals

Fuel your body consistently throughout the day by eating every 2–3 hours. Regular meals and snacks can help support steady energy, better glucose control, portion awareness, and even mood.

This might look like:
• 3 balanced meals with snacks in between
• 5–6 smaller balanced snacks throughout the day
• Or a mix of a couple meals and a few snacks

A helpful rule: pair protein with a complex carbohydrate (whole grains, fruits, or vegetables) to stay fuller longer and keep energy steady.
Snack ideas:
• Apple + peanut butter
• Carrots + hummus
• Cheese + whole-wheat crackers
• Nuts + dried fruit
• Greek yogurt + fruit

Planning ahead can make balanced snacking much easier during a busy day.

March is National Nutrition Month 🥦✨

We’re excited to share weekly tips all month long from our Registered Dietitian, Casey Michel, MS, RD, CSSD!

Week 1 Tip: Make half your plate vegetables.

Why?
🥕 Packed with nutrients
🌾 High in fiber
⏳ Keeps you fuller, longer

Keep it simple:
✔️ Prep cut-up veggies and keep them in the fridge
✔️ Buy pre-cut veggies to save time

And remember — it doesn’t have to be a salad!

🥒 Snack on cucumbers, bell peppers, carrots, or jicama
🥑 Add salsa or avocado to omelets, bowls, or salads
🍕 Toss veggies onto pizza, sandwiches, soups, stir-fries — even smoothies

Frozen counts, too!
🫛 Add shelled edamame to bowls or enjoy on its own
🥦 Microwave veggie steamer bags for an easy side
🥕 Roast frozen veggies with a drizzle of oil on a sheet pan for a quick, delicious addition to any meal

Small changes add up. Let’s make it a healthy March!

Be safe, Mammoth!

Buckle up kids, the storm is here! It's snowin and blowin, with over a foot of snow so far today. More feet of snow coming tonight and tomorrow. Chain controls are in effect (check road conditions at roads.dot.ca.gov), with no promises the roads will stay open. So make good decisions (carry brains!), and stay safe and warm.
