Dr K knows what he’s talking about!
I have received flak for emphasizing that autoimmunity is incurable, but here's why it's important that my patients understand this.
Our goal with autoimmunity is to put it into remission and keep it there as much as possible. But sometimes life happens.
Different people have different triggers, and they aren't always under our control. A car accident, losing your job, an illness, a falling out with someone, an intense chemical exposure — these are just a few examples of things that can cause an autoimmune relapse.
Likewise, larger life issues such as pregnancy and childbirth, motherhood, perimenopause, and aging all impact the immune system in different ways and may require adjustments.
For the person who was told their autoimmunity was cured, these backslides can be devastating — they may feel like a personal failure.
The immune system is not static. It is constantly changing in response to the external and internal environments. Understanding relapse and remission within the bigger picture helps you better navigate these shifts.
When you feel good, make note of your diet, supplements, sleep habits, exercise, relationships, and so on. This will help you plan a strategy for when you do relapse so you can recover as quickly as possible.
