Employee well-being and happiness are integral to our community at Birmingham Green. Recently, we hosted the Kaiser Permanente Wellness Bus to offer convenient access to screenings, wellness education, and flu vaccines for our team.

Our people make our mission possible, and this is just one way we show our commitment to our team.

We’re grateful for partners like Volunteer Prince William, who also support our work in the community. If you’re able to lend a hand this winter, consider signing up as a Volunteer Snow Shoveler - a great way to make sure seniors and neighbors with disabilities can safely get out after a storm. Learn more and sign up below.

As we look ahead at the winter forecast, we’re busy planning ways to support members of our community who may need extra help after a snowstorm. ❄️

Volunteer Prince William is recruiting Volunteer Snow Shovelers to assist senior citizens and adults with disabilities by clearing sidewalks and driveways after snowstorms.

Who can volunteer?
💙Volunteers ages 16 and older are welcome
💙Volunteers under 16 may participate with a parent

Volunteers must provide their own snow shovel.

Who Receives This Service:
❄️Senior citizens with critical medical needs such as dialysis/cancer treatment appointments
❄️Senior citizens receiving in-home care such as hospice or visiting caregivers
❄️Senior citizens who are disabled and unable to shovel snow
❄️Adult residents under 65 who are disabled
❄️All other senior citizens who are physically unable to shovel their walk/driveway

What to expect:
❄️Volunteers will be on call through March 31
❄️Shoveling typically takes place 1–3 days after a snowstorm

You’ll help vulnerable residents safely access critical medical appointments, home healthcare, and enter or exit their homes

You’ll get a great workout—and a warm fuzzy feeling—by making a real difference in someone’s life! 💙

Two practical “don’ts” that we tell every family before going on a tour:

🚫 Don’t go alone - bring someone who will notice what you miss. Picking a senior living provider for your loved one is a major decision, and you deserve support while you make it. Bringing someone with you helps you stay grounded in the facts, ask better questions, and make a clear, rational choice—not a rushed, emotional one.

🚫 Don’t bring your loved one on the first visit, if possible. Making a transition to a senior living facility can be overwhelming and emotional for families. Tour a few facilities and narrow your choices first before bringing your loved one will reduce anxiety.

Families often ask: What’s the difference?

💚Assisted living typically supports daily needs (meals, medication support, bathing/dressing) while focusing on independence and quality of life.

💙Nursing homes generally provide a higher level of ongoing medical and nursing care for more complex needs.

The right fit depends on an individual’s personal needs. Our admissions team will help you assess the best fit for your loved one.

Daily activities matter a lot for seniors. At Birmingham Green, assisted living isn’t just about meals and rest—it’s about belonging, purpose, and staying engaged.
Because what residents do as a community doesn’t just fill time. It supports emotional well-being, encourages routine, and helps people feel like themselves.

Our Life Enrichment team thoughtfully plans activities designed for different levels of participation and a wide range of interests. From movie nights and craft afternoons to community engagement visits, residents have consistent opportunities to connect, create, and enjoy meaningful moments together.

When planning a facility tour, pay attention to the staff. Staff quality shapes daily life. On your tour, ask about: staff-to-resident ratio (including overnight), training and certifications, and the background check policy during the hiring. And don’t forget to ask the staff you meet what they love about working there, it will give you a different perspective that you can’t see in slick brochures.

Don’t let the emotion of choosing assisted living overwhelm you. Use a checklist to keep you focused on what matters, not just what looks nice on a tour.
Here are five things to note on your tour (besides how shiny new the finishes look):

1. Secure entries and exits
2. Emergency call system in rooms
3. Caregivers available 24/7
4. Range of care options
5. Easy access to bathrooms and common areas
