Women have always shown resilience, often in ways that never made the history books.

This Women’s History Month, we’re proud to share the story of one of our residents, Doris Austin Forde, a 101-year-old nurse whose century of service, determination, and quiet leadership reflects that legacy. From pursuing nursing as a path to independence in the 1940s to championing the power of compassionate, human care, her journey is a reminder that the people we serve are also keepers of history.

Women make up nearly 80% of the healthcare workforce. At Birmingham Green, that strength is reflected across our leadership, nursing, life enrichment, learning and development, and dining teams.

Thank you to all the women whose skill, compassion, and steady care are making a difference for our residents and their families and are helping set the standard for senior living.

Classroom learning is only the beginning of the wound care education of our recently Vohra Wound Care Certified nurses. Upon completion of their training, Dr. Hawkins, our wound care physician, conducted in-person wound rounds, reinforcing their learning with treatment demonstrations and hands-on validation.

This interactive experience allowed our nurses to apply certification knowledge directly to resident care, gain clinical confidence, and better understand wound types and treatment selection. The hands-on physician engagement enables them to deliver exceptional wound-healing services and allows us to provide the highest quality of care and outcomes to all the residents in our senior living community.

Birmingham Green is thrilled to announce a new partnership with George Mason University (GMU)! For the upcoming 2026-2027 academic year, we will serve as a practicum site offering GMU students learning opportunities across all nine social work competency areas, including direct work with individuals, families, groups, and interdisciplinary teams.

This initiative is part of GMU’s practicum and internship program, which partners with community organizations to provide hands-on, supervised learning experiences for Bachelor of Social Work (BSW) and Master of Social Work (MSW) students.

This exciting new initiative will strengthen our social services department by expanding service capacity, supporting evidence-based practice, and enhancing interdisciplinary care for residents, while ensuring high-quality clinical oversight under our Director of Social Services, who holds a Licensed Clinical Social Worker (LCSW) credential. Additionally, it reaffirms our role as a community party and teaching site, supports workforce development, and helps cultivate future social work professionals trained in long-term care and geriatric services.

Personalized meal planning is one of the most practical forms of heart care—because two residents can share the same diagnosis and still need different approaches. Appetite, energy, texture needs, blood sugar response, and cultural preferences all matter. The goal isn’t restriction, it’s precision, consistency, and meals that residents will actually enjoy.
