Super cool image to share with how our eyes can play tricks on us!

The Thatcher Effect:

This illusion highlights a flaw in how our brains work - we can't process an upside-down face because we are programmed to recognize faces the right way up.
We create a mental map by recognizing the face in pieces - eyes, mouth, and nose.
So when we're presented with an upside-down, Thatcherised image, it's not processed properly.
We know it's upside down, but because we so rarely encounter upside-down faces, we haven't evolved to interpret the expressions on them.
The facial features look fine, so our brains assume the rest of the face is as well.
That's why we don't see anything out of the ordinary until we turn the face the ‘right way’ up.

"I make dolls, which is not a heroic profession. But recently I was asked to make a doll for a little girl who is a superhero. A mama contacted me and asked if I would make a bunny doll with one eye for her two-year-old daughter who loves animals and lost her left eye to cancer. The girl had started to notice she was different and her sweet mama read articles about how finding a doll who matches how a child looks can be helpful and therapeutic.

She wanted her daughter to have a doll that looks like her and only has her right eye. To date, I don't think I've ever been asked to create something so tender and meaningful. Here is the adorable little girl on her third birthday, hugging her one-eyed bunny who is just as perfect and beautiful as she is. My favorite part of this photo is how she is wearing her Wonder Woman nightgown. It perfectly represents the strength and courage of this little superhero."

We're filming an exciting new video project and want to hear from YOU! Show the world the power of extraordinary stories. Email Casey@LoveWhatMatters.com to get involved.

In honor of Fireworks Safety Awareness Week, here are six steps that can help save your child’s sight:

If an accident does occur, minimize the damage to the eye. In the event of an eye emergency:

-- Do not rub the eye. Rubbing the eye may increase bleeding or make the injury worse.
-- Do not attempt to rinse out the eye. This can be even more damaging than rubbing.
-- Do not apply pressure to the eye itself. Holding or taping a foam cup or the bottom of a juice carton to the eye are just two tips. Protecting the eye from further contact with any item, including the child’s hand, is the goal.
-- Do not stop for medicine! Over-the-counter pain relievers will not do much to relieve pain. Aspirin (should never be given to children) and ibuprofen can thin the blood, increasing bleeding. Take the child to the emergency room at once – this is more important than stopping for a pain reliever.
-- Do not apply ointment. Ointment, which may not be sterile, makes the area around the eye slippery and harder for the doctor to examine.

Most eye injuries from fireworks occur during the one month period surrounding the Fourth of July. There is no safe way for nonprofessionals to use fireworks.

Contemplating life’s mysteries...

Why does the treat container empty?

Why can you chew with false teeth but you can’t see with prosthetic eyes?

Why are vision exams not required for school in so many states?

If vision occurs in the first 7 years of life why do we not make it necessary to get a eye exam earlier in life instead of waiting until the age of 5 or even later?

Why are eye exams only suggested when a problem is noticed instead of preventing a problem?

Why if 80% of learning is visual, do 50% of kids not have a back to school vision exam?

Why does mommy say, “all done” when I know there are more treats?

It is with a very heavy heart that we announce the passing of our office manager and friend, Kim. For over 20 years, Kim blessed our office with her smile, humor, and kindness. She cared deeply for all of our patients and treated her coworkers as family. Kim has left a hole in our hearts that can never be filled and she will be sorely missed.
