There is a misguided concept in the healthcare community that calling *besity a disease makes it less stigmatizing.

"Person first" language, where instead of saying *bese person, one might say "person with *besity" doesn't really make it any better.

The reason we don't spell out the full word is because the word itself is pathologizing.

It is defined by BMI, which is flawed in oh-so-many ways. Someone's body size alone does not indicate the presence of a disease.

Sure, people can experience disease at high weights, but they also experience them at low weights, and "average" weights and everything in between.

Calling a body size a disease is weight stigma, in no uncertain terms.

Because we know that weight stigma harms health, calling *besity a disease does NOTHING to actually improve the health of the people the healthcare system claims it wants to "cure".

But it does create more space for drug companies to come in with proposed treatments...

Treatments that interfere with someone's normal, healthy biological functioning, all in the name of reducing the impact of *besity.

It doesn't make sense.

Your body is not a disease.

We won't treat it like one.

Weight Stigma Awareness week is September 25-29 this year.

Weight stigma harms all of us.

Violence and discrimination against humans based on body size is toxic to our health and wellbeing.

Stigmatizing experiences for individuals in large bodies are horrifyingly commonplace still in this country and around the world.

We are sharing some sobering statistics to kick off this week in hopes of raising awareness and building a groundswell of momentum for fighting back against weight stigma -- both overt and covert.

We invite you to join the conversation this week

Have you thought about intuitive eating, but are afraid of losing the control around food? Are you worried that your body will just always want cake, cookies, and chips if you really honor your cravings?

We hear these concerns a lot from our clients, which is why we focus on helping our clients make peace with food (intuitive eating principle 3!)

Think about how you feel when you eat leftovers for a week straight, or, you wear a new article of clothing a few times. It kinda loses its appeal and gets less exciting right?

This is called habituation.

Once you give yourself unconditional permission to eat, your body's cravings will slowly start to change. Instead of wanting cake, cookies, and chips every day like you thought you would, if you incorporate these foods that may have once been "forbidden," they become "regular food" and lose their excitement and appeal.

So allowing yourself to have those "off limits" or "forbidden" foods is an important step in healing your relationship with food and learning how to trust your body.

We get that this is easier said than done. The dietitians at NourishRX are here to support you on this journey.

You have UNCONDITIONAL PERMISSION to eat.

That means there are no ifs, ands, buts, or shoulds about it.

All food is on the table because all food has value.

And whenever you start to worry about limiting certain foods or actively restrict foods, you're giving those foods more power than they really have.

Binge eating is often a response to restriction, or the promise of future deprivation ("Let me eat all this food today because the 'diet starts tomorrow'").

Working on giving yourself unconditional permission to eat helps to break this cycle.

Give us a ๐Ÿ‘Š in the comments below if you are working on allowing yourself permission to eat all foods.

Save and share the ones that resonate most with you.

Your body isn't asking you to change it, it is asking for you to listen and to care for it.

Amy Poehler said it best!

Good for you, not for me. โœŒ

What someone else decides to do is their business and it has nothing to do with you or your situation.

Keep those boundaries strong and secure.

You're working on you.

You know what works and what doesn't work for you.

That's the compass you need to follow.

Share this with someone who needs to hear it today.

You got you.

You might be wondering why we spend so much time talking about body image here on our socials, on the blog, and in our sessions with clients.

Because it's relevant.

Because body image can be so closely connected to our intentions around eating. How we see and perceive ourself matters.

Body image is about so much more than reframing the way we see ourselves.

It's about learning to respect and care for ourselves regardless of how we look, and nourishing your body is part of that process.

What questions do you have about body image?

We invite you to bring them with you to session with your RD, or to set up your first visit with us today. Visit https://nourishrx.com/appointments to book your call today.

Body changes are difficult even without the added layer of society's obsession with an unrealistic thin ideal.

Making room for new clothes is emotionally and logistically difficult.

But if you're at the point where you are ready to say goodbye to clothes that don't support your current body, here are a few tips to help make the process of buying new clothes a bit easier.

1. Talk it through with someone you trust.

2. Make a list of the important pieces you need.

3. Start by going to just a few stores before going on a full-on spree.

4. Bring a support person with you.

5. Consider online shopping.

6. Buy more than one size. You can always return what doesn't fit later.

7. Focus on fit and comfort before looking in the mirror.
