Like many of you, I feel rejuvenated when the weather gets better.
There's something about longer, sunnier days that appeals to me.

The only drawback about the longer days is that I'm awake longer and therefore have more time to eat. Then snack. Then eat. Then snack. Repeat.

This month I encourage all of us to focus on God's goodness to us in the longer day - more time to look at the flowers, smell the spring rain, visit with friends, and observe the singing birds.

Ps 34:3 invites us to magnify the Lord. Let's enjoy doing just that!

This month we celebrate Resurrection Day (Easter). The day our Lord paid for all of our food failures and other sins.

As a person who struggles with eating inappropriately, I find that most of my food failures come when I minimize what Jesus did for me on the cross and I maximize how moronic my flesh is.

In other words, I am especially weak when I am consumed with thoughts of myself instead of thoughts reflecting on Christ.

How about you?

Spring is here! Do you enjoy the change in seasons?

The change in seasons can bring change in thinking, opinions, values, and goals - more importantly God decreed the change in seasons in order for us to look up to Him.

As we enter into sunshine and warmer weather, I invite you to take a moment and ask God what changes He wants to make in your life. Maybe its adding more fresh fruit or veggies to meals. Or going to the doctor for that "thing" you've been putting off.

"While the earth remains, seedtime and harvest, cold and heat, summer and winter, day and night, shall not cease." The Lord God, in Genesis 8:22

Does your snacking go up in the winter?

Mine does...cold outside, shorter days...I seem to walk by the fridge & pantry more often in winter.

I'm reminded that God has a beautiful purpose for winter.

What does God want us to meditate on this month? I suspect our snacking will go down, if we seek out His purpose for us in this season.

"You have fixed all the boundaries of the earth; You have made summer and winter." Psalm 74:17 ESV

New Year's Resolutions....love 'em or hate 'em?

As a chronic failure at NYR regarding dieting, I gave up NYR years ago and I haven't regretted it.

But when I did make NYR for eating better, and I would fail, I had regret plus shame....and the shame led me to overeat to console the shame I felt at overeating. What a mess!

The bible says in Ecclesiastes 5:5 "Better that you do not vow than that you vow and not fulfill it."

I love the Christmas season, but it comes with a hefty price tag: baked treats and candies.

For someone who struggles with food, the holidays can be bittersweet (pun intended).

I want to encourage you this holiday season to find joy in the birth of our Savior, who loves us deeply, richly, tenderly, and forgivingly.

May God bless you this Christmas!

Fried shrimp are always angry. They have a hard time controlling their tempura.

It's fun to laugh about food, but being entangled with eating problems is no joke.

Jesus said the he came to set the captives free (Lk 4:18). When he spoke that, he wasn't at a prison talking to inmates - he was talking to all of humanity.

Be encouraged today that the one who came to set you free is still in the business of busting trapped people out of captivity. Even if that captivity is something common, like a box of cookies you gave in to.

Donut or Celery Stick? Those were the choices at a function the other day. If I had picked the celery, I would have done the healthy thing, but a part of me would feel resentful at missing out on the donut. If I had picked the donut, guilt and shame would have riddled me all morning.

Answer: I picked neither. I walked away from the table without anything. It was actually a good choice that resulted in good feelings, because I escaped both resentment and guilt.

"No temptation has overtaken you except what is common to mankind. And God is faithful; He will not let you be tempted beyond what you can bear. But when you are tempted, he will also provide a way out so that you can endure." 1 Cor. 10:13

Grace means there is nothing I can do to make God love me more, and nothing I can do to make God love me less. It means that I, even I who deserve the opposite, am invited to take my place at the table in God's family - Philip Yancey

At dinner with my husband last night for our anniversary:

Hubby: "I'm going to keep my calories down tonight."
Me, gazing wistfully at the dessert menu, said woefully: "Ok, me too, I'll just get a salad."
Hubby: "You can have salad at home! But if you get the cheeseburger, then I can have part of it and some of your fries..."

Being a tired, dutiful wife who loves fries, I complied. But was that the wise choice?

Any advice on how I should have handled that, when food has always been my struggle?

Yesterday I ate 2 ice cream bars - they were carb-smart and so I told myself it was okay...but today when I slowed down enough to think abut it, I realized I ate bar #2 because I was feeling anxious...a tad stressed.

Jesus said if we would follow him, then we wouldn't have to walk in darkness (John 8:12)

For me, anxiety is the "darkness" that spurs overeating. Today I am intentionally focusing on the fact that Jesus is the light and in Him there is no darkness at all - in Him there is no such thing as anxiety.
