We’d love to meet up with you, Sage!
We are happy to share that Sage Phillips (she/her,Penobscot) has accepted a new full time role with the Wabanaki Alliance: she will be our first Communications and Community Engagement Coordinator.
In 2023, Sage joined the Wabanaki Alliance as a fellow; we welcomed her back at the end of last year and are so very happy to have her role evolve into a full-time position. She will manage communications and conduct outreach to Wabanaki communities to ensure tribal citizens feel informed and empowered by the work of the Wabanaki Alliance. While a primary focus is working with tribal nations, she will also work on educational panels throughout our homelands. Sage carries with her the spirit we have fostered of friendship and unity with all Mainers.
She and her peers have created a tribal youth policy team to focus on initiatives with coalition partners and other young tribal leaders. We are excited to have her on the team and in this position, it is so important to our growth and capacity.
She holds her Bachelors degree in Political Science and Human Rights with a minor in Native Studies as well as her Masters in Human Rights with a focus on Indigenous Education Rights; both from the University of Connecticut. She was named a 2021 Truman and Udall Scholar, a 2024 Champion for Change Fellow, and served as the Vice Chair of the Center for Native American Youth’s Youth Advisory Board.
Sage’s grandfather, the late Reuben (Butch) Phillips, spent a lifetime working for the visibility, diplomacy, and vision of Wabanaki people as an elected leader and also as a constant and steady ambassador. He is now an ancestor and many people of all backgrounds will always look to his wisdom and words to guide current circumstances. He had a profound impact on Sage’s life and her dedication to tribal and human rights. He talked with her about her dream of bringing her focus back to the Wabanaki Alliance before he passed away in July of last year. She says of this new role, “Grampy would be happy.”
