February is National Heart Month. A healthy heart supports a healthy body, including your eyes.👁

Your heart pumps blood to structures like the retina and optic nerve. Conditions such as high blood pressure, high cholesterol, and diabetes don’t just affect your heart, they can also increase the risk of vision problems like hypertensive retinopathy, retinal vein occlusions, and even vision loss.

This month, take care of your heart by:
• Monitoring blood pressure & cholesterol
• Staying active
• Eating heart-healthy foods
• Scheduling regular checkups

In honor of Black History Month, lets take a three influential doctors who have helped shape the Ophthalmology community.

-Dr. Maurice Rabb Jr. was a distinguished ophthalmologist known for his contributions to corneal and retinal vascular disease research. Among the first African American students at the University of Louisville, he later became the first Black chief resident at the University of Illinois Eye and Ear Infirmary. His impact on ophthalmic education and research continues to shape the field today.

-Dr. Constance Okeke is a leading innovator in modern ophthalmology, recognized for advancing the treatment of glaucoma through cutting-edge surgical techniques and for integrating laser-assisted cataract surgery into patient care. She is widely respected for her commitment to improving surgical outcomes, mentoring future eye physicians, and expanding access to high-quality eye care, particularly in underserved communities.

-Dr. Patricia Bath discovered and invented a new device and technique for cataract surgery known as Laserphaco. She was also the first African American female to receive a medical patent, which was for the Laserphaco Probe for laser cataract surgery in 1988. She was inducted into the AAO Museum of Ophthalmology in 2011.
