This week, we celebrate Nurse Practitioner Week! These clinicians assess, diagnose, and treat acute and chronic conditions, as well as counsel, coordinate care, and educate patients about their health. Nurse Practitioners bring a comprehensive perspective to health care. Our NPs play a vital role in the care we provide to our patients here at Amoskeag Health.

We thank Elizabeth, Katherine, Nicolle, Kristin, Maurene, Jeremy, Michelle, Amy, Simone, and Imani for all the hard work they do!

Prevention works by strengthening protective factors and reducing risk factors in individuals, families, schools, communities, and society. During Substance Use and Misuse Prevention Month, we’re highlighting parents in recovery who are learning to talk openly with their children about substance use through the Manchester Youth Wellness and Prevention Collaborative parenting program.

SNAP benefits are expected to pause at the end of this week due to the government shutdown. The New Hampshire Department of Health and Human Services has advised the 75,000 Granite Staters receiving SNAP recipients to consider using their benefits by Friday, October 31st in the event access to unused benefits is cut off. To help increase access to food for SNAP recipients, the state of New Hampshire has partnered with the New Hampshire Food Bank for additional mobile and traditional food pantry options.

The state has also found funding to continue WIC program services until at least November 7th, but services through Community Action Partnership Hillsborough & Rockingham Counties and Community Action Program Belknap-Merrimack Counties may be temporarily paused starting November 1st.

If you need food assistance during this time, please see the link to food pantries available in our comments or let your provider know during your appointment with us.

Today, Amoskeag Health hosted a roundtable discussion with Congressman Chris Pappas on the potential impacts of the enhanced Marketplace Premium Tax Credits set to expire at the end of this year.

The discussion included Patrick Curtin, CFO of Amoskeag Health; Betsy Burtis, COO of Amoskeag Health; Gregory White, Co-CEO of Lamprey Health Care; Jocelyn Caple, CEO of Greater Seacoast Community Health; Stephanie Pagliuca, Senior Director of Workforce Development and Recruitment at Bi-State Primary Care Association; and Henry Och, President and CEO of Harbor Care.

The conversation focused on how the expiration of these credits could affect patients and community health centers. Many enrollees are expected to face sharply higher insurance costs, and some are likely to drop coverage because of that cost. Research shows that when people go without insurance or delay care for financial reasons, it can make health problems worse and treatment more expensive. Participants agreed that decreases in coverage would put additional strain on FQHCs and CHCs, which would likely face higher volumes of uncompensated care.

Changes to these credits could affect not just individuals, but the broader health of our communities.
