Edwin Egli

Edwin George Egli, 89, of New Salem, North Dakota, passed away on April 25, 2026, at St. Alexius Hospital in Bismarck.

A Memorial Prayer Service will be held on Sunday, May 3, 2026, at 4:30 PM at New Salem United Church of Christ with Pastor Marcy Dawson officiating. Visitation will open to the public from 3:00 - 4:30 PM at the church on Sunday. The family invites you for desserts and refreshments in the lower level of the church immediately following the service.

Edwin was born on August 3, 1936, in New Salem, ND, to Alfred and Lydia Egli. He was raised and educated in New Salem, graduating in 1954. As a freshman in high school, he took over the family farm, beginning a lifelong commitment to agriculture. He farmed and ranched his entire life, raising small grains, hogs, and beef and dairy cattle.

On June 20, 1964, Edwin was united in marriage to Sharie Bailey in New Salem. Together they made their home in New Salem, where Edwin lived his entire life.

Faith and family were the cornerstones of Edwin’s life. He was a member of both New Salem First Presbyterian Church and Salem United Church of Christ. He also served his community through involvement on numerous boards, including the school board, church board, and Elm Crest board.

Edwin was known for his strong work ethic and ingenuity. He was rarely idle and was always working on a project to make a job easier, earning a reputation as someone who could make something out of nothing. A big man with an even bigger heart, Edwin was always there to lend a helping hand to anyone in need.

Among his many memorable accomplishments was training two hogs to pull a wagon, which he proudly showcased in the 1983 New Salem Centennial Parade and several other parades that summer. He also enjoyed a good joke, often beginning with, “Did you hear the one about…?” In his younger years, Edwin enjoyed bowling and roller skating, and throughout his life he treasured time spent with his family and tinkering in his shop.

Edwin lived by his favorite guiding principle, the Golden Rule: “Do unto others as you would have them do unto you” (Matthew 7:12), a standard he carried with him each day.

Grateful for having shared his life is his wife, Sharie Egli of New Salem; his children, Dwayne and Wendy Egli of Mandan, ND and Ron and Shawna Egli of New Salem, ND; seven grandchildren; one great-grandchild; and his sister, Rose Marie Utley of Lincoln, NE.

Edwin was preceded in death by his parents, Alfred and Lydia Egli; his grandfather, John; his brothers, John Egli and Elmer Egli; and sisters, Martha Becker and Ann Maynard.

Edwin will be remembered for his kindness, his dedication to his family and community, his creativity, and the lasting impact he made on all who knew him.

Gene C. Wells

Gene Carroll Wells, age 94 died April 24, 2026.

Funeral services will be held at 11:00 MDT, Friday, May 1, 2026 at St Theresa’s Catholic Church in Carson, ND. Final resting place will be the Carson Community Cemetery with reception held at Hammer Down in Carson.

Gene was born on September 26, 1931, at home in Brisbane, North Dakota, to Dorothea (Hostetler) and Carroll F. Wells. He joined older brothers Erwin and Delbert and sisters Mavis and Joyce followed later.

Gene attended a one-room schoolhouse through the eighth grade before beginning a life shaped by hard work, curiosity, & quiet determination. He proudly served in the United States Army and was stationed in Germany, where he developed a fondness for pizza and famously claimed to know just three German words: pizza, beer, and thank you.

After his service, Gene returned to the family ranch. Life took a meaningful turn when he met the new schoolmarm, Carolyn Miller. Gene and Carolyn were married on November 20, 1959 and together they built a life rooted in love, family and the land. They raised five children: Jennifer, Craig, Kathy, Lisa and Barbara.

One day, Gene saw a picture of an Arabian horse in a magazine and decided he needed one. That single image grew into a lifelong passion for raising and showing Arabian horses. Through years of travel and competition, Gene formed lasting friendships and earned deep respect in the horse community. One of his proudest moments came when he ran a reining pattern without a bridle—after already competing once with one—and the judge declared the second run even better.

Gene was known as a good neighbor and a kind, dependable man, always willing to lend a helping hand. He loved farming and ranching and found great joy fishing the local Cannonball River, where he earned a reputation as quite the fisherman.

Gene is survived by his daughters Jennifer and Barbara (Steve Williams); and his grandchildren, Katie Nelson, Matthew Hartman, Marlin Wells, Jeffrey, Jacob and Kaycee Eagleton and Ryan Williams, along with 6 great grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents, his wife, Carolyn; children Kathy, Craig and Lisa; his son-in-law Mike Hartman; and his brothers Erwin and Delbert.

Gene’s life was one of quiet strength, deep loyalty, and enduring love—for family, friends, horses, and the land he called home. He instilled his work ethic in his children.

He could often be found at sporting events, proudly cheering on his children and grandchildren—whether it was basketball, baseball, volleyball, hockey, bull riding, or more.

Courtney Sondrol

Courtney R. Sondrol, 44, passed away March 21, 2026, at Sanford Health in Fargo, ND. Cremation has taken place.

Family and friends are invited to a Celebration of Life Service on Saturday, May 23, 2026, from 1 - 4 PM at the Mandan Eagles Club. Courtney was born July 9, 1981, to Clyde and Michele (Lanz) Sondrol in Bismarck. Her older brother, Travis, was excited to start picking on his little sister. Courtney’s huge love for pets began when she was young and only grew and gained more variety. She had dogs, cats, birds, fish, hamsters, and more, but she especially loved her labradoodles, Nala and Murphy. Courtney grew up in Mandan and attended Central Elementary, Mandan Junior High, and Mandan Senior High, where she met lifelong friends who brought her countless memories. From a young age, she had a natural kindness about her. She loved to support and cheer on the people who meant the most to her and celebrate their accomplishments. She was never jealous of others when they succeeded—only proud. She was the kind of person who would lend a hand wherever it was needed and always tried to give, even when she didn’t have much. Her caring heart made her someone people could always count on. Courtney had a great sense of humor and could make people laugh with her quick wit and lighthearted personality. She brought warmth into every room she walked into and had a way of making others feel comfortable, valued, and loved. Her relationships with her family and friends meant everything to her, and she put her whole heart into the people she loved. Courtney was very adventurous and truly enjoyed being out in nature. She loved taking the dogs on walks, collecting rocks, being on the boat, camping, stargazing, and going to the lake. She lived life to the fullest, appreciating the little moments just as much as the big ones, and finding joy in the simple beauty around her. Her greatest joy and proudest role in life was being a mother. Her biggest adventures came in 2003 and 2006 when she became a mom to Dylan and Elliot. Even as a child, Courtney loved to play pretend house and would talk about how she couldn’t wait to become a mother. That dream became the center of her world. She was always so proud of her two children and found any chance she could to talk about them. Dylan and Elliot were Courtney’s purpose, her pride, and her greatest happiness. She loved them deeply and unconditionally, and being their mom was the role she cherished most in life. Courtney was also incredibly excited when she became an aunt, a role she embraced with so much love and pride. Even though distance kept them from seeing each other as often as she would have liked, she held a special bond with her nieces and nephew, Jack, Peyton, and Grace. She loved hearing about their lives, celebrating their milestones, and finding ways to stay connected no matter the miles between them. When they were together, she made every moment count—bringing her warmth, laughter, and caring nature into their lives. She was a wonderful aunt who loved them deeply, and that love was always felt, near or far. Throughout her life, Courtney faced her share of hardships and challenges. No matter what she was going through, she carried herself with strength, resilience, and determination. She did her best to overcome the obstacles in her path, always pushing forward with the same caring heart and love for the people around her. Even in difficult times, she continued to show kindness, humor, and compassion to others, often putting them before herself. Courtney’s journey was not always easy, but it was filled with love, growth, and perseverance. The strength she showed and the love she gave will never be forgotten by those who knew her. While her passing leaves a deep void in the hearts of her family and friends, there is comfort in knowing that she is now at peace. Courtney will be remembered for her kind heart, her unwavering love for her children, her devotion to her family and friends, and the joy and laughter she brought into so many lives. Her memory will live on through the countless lives she touched and the love she leaves behind. She continues to spread love through the gift of organ donation.

Courtney is survived by her parents, Clyde and Michelle Sondrol, Hazen, ND; brother, Travis (Ann) Sondrol, Craig, CO; her children, Dylan Yantzer (Kyley Becker) and Elliot Petryszyn (Ethan Ressler), all of Mandan; nieces and nephews, Jack, Grace, and Peyton Sondrol; Craig, CO; as well as many aunts, uncles, cousins, extended family, and countless friends.

Courtney was preceded in death by her grandparents, Ernest and Ester Sondrol and Merle and Jane Lanz; as well as her cousin, Thalia Lanz; and too many friends to mention.

Courtney’s family would like to thank everyone for their thoughts & prayers, kind words, and support through this hard time, not just for them but for Courtney as well. Along with thanking Sanford Medical Center in Fargo, ND.

Chloe found joy in bowling, which she did up into her 80’s, and she also enjoyed sewing, crocheting, and reading. Throughout her life, Chloe was known for her kindness, and always being well dressed with perfect hair, although no one could cut it right, and her sometimes “spicy” attitude. If she had an opinion, you knew it. Chloe and Richard spent summers at their lake cabin, fishing and socializing with their lake friends and they enjoyed many travel adventures together. Above all, she enjoyed her kids, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren.

Chloe is survived by her children, Todd (Laurie) Leingang, Russell (Tammy) Leingang, Jill (Tom) Hertz, and daughter-in-law, Deb Leingang; 8 grandchildren, Nikki (Rob) Pedersen, Jaymi (James) Langer, Eric Strom, Brittany (Tyler) Helfrich, Kylie (Cam) Heidrich, Jaden (Sara) Hertz, Bryn (Ashley) Hertz, and Laura (Cole) Heilman; 14 great grandchildren, Brentley, Scarlett, Jackson, Ezra, Paysen, Sutten, Colter, Kinzley, Griffin, Riley, Edyn, Everett, Aela, and Vincent; brother, Nick Wead; and sister, Joycelyn Noakes.

Chloe will be deeply missed and forever remembered by all who knew and loved her.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the ND Veterans Cemetery or First Lutheran Church of Mandan, in honor of Chloe.
