serious question: Did anyone screen U or they “assumed” you had Type 2?

Diabetes doesn’t look a certain way. It can affect anyone at anytime - no one has immunity from this.

Beta cells produce the hormone insulin which can slowly decrease production in both Types 1 and 2. But, thankfully we know certain medications are glucose sparing. which can buy time.

But like my sign says, if this is autoimmune Type 1 (and not detected), you’ll eventually end up at the point of no return.

Think before you jab 💉

Look for strong data points first when reviewing cgm reports. Give positive reinforcement on what is Right. Not what you want to correct.

Because the world has enough critics. That’s why in Diabetes, it’s not productive to focus on the “bad days” or force people to follow rules like being obsessed with A1c.

I encourage you to figure out what works well for that specific person. Then do that same, one thing. Over and over and over again until it’s mastered.

Consistent behavior change combined with cgm use helps manage blood sugar tighterthan any device or digit can on its own.

If you’d like to challenge that, I have thousands of patient cases as proof that speak otherwise 📣

Reverse psychology works like a charm 💃🏼

True story - I always got in trouble for talking too much in typing class. So learned how to type fast instead. Had to get notes out to my friends! To this day, I clock over 100 WPM and also utilize dictation. Who knew how vital Communication would be as a Diabetes NP.

Also shout out to my Gifted Math teacher who mentioned I shouldn’t keep up with the sophomores because I wasn’t good at numbers. Ok fine then: I’ll just be a nurse, titrate insulin, & start corporations with my critical thinking skills instead. Your loss.

A study on a medication for low blood sugar. They are still enrolling!

Many people with T1D struggle with frequent overnight lows.

That’s why a clinical trial is now enrolling adults with T1D to study a medication that may help reduce nighttime hypoglycemia.

Zucara Therapeutics’ trial has expanded to 10 new locations nationwide. If you checked before and weren’t eligible, now is a great time to look again!

You could potentially qualify if you:

☑️ Are between 18 and 75 years old
☑️ Were diagnosed with T1D 5+ years ago

Surface level diabetes testing includes Hgba1c. Here’s what’s changed 👇

• Hgba1c is a stable, well studied predictor of diabetes risk; but it’s limiting because it’s based on ~3 months of data from the hemoglobin or red blood cell. This doesn’t take into account anemias, and it takes too much time.

• Measuring glucose allows evaluation of your response time and trends. The use of traditional fingerstick, cgm, and glucose tolerance testing will provide quicker feedback to get us closer to a diagnosis.

•Continuous glucose monitoring takes into account glucose averages PLUS standard deviation so we can then calculate a coefficient of variation (CV). Hgba1c can’t do that. Higher percentages of CV can tell us if something is wrong sooner. And knowing sooner is better.

• Genetic testing reveals people at risk for diabetes long before their Hgba1c is ever elevated. This blood testing wasn’t available years ago.

• Autoantibody screening allows us to differentiate T1D and stage it, allowing opportunities for delaying insulin dependence or trying to prevent it.

No one cares about your A1C j/k;
But I do want to know your glucose 🫶

Also not scared of positive autoantibodies because if you have two✌️or more that’s an opportunity for time to teach, teplizumab, or referral for clinical trials.

Finding a Type 1 Diabetes diagnosis before someone needs insulin is critical. We can prevent DKA and potentially prevent insulin dependence.

Taking to the street for my stage. Here’s why I thought appropriate 💃🏼

Diabetes occurs in STAGES. It’s not just snap crackle pop, you’re sick! Luckily we can screen people for diabetes and differentiate between T1D and T2D.

When I started out in Advanced diabetes care, this wasn’t a standard of care. But it is in 2026, and has been for several years. Here’s what to expect:

Since we know Type 1 Diabetes is an autoimmune disease, progressive in nature, it moves through stages at different intervals and rates. It can be detected on bloodwork with a combination of autoantibody and glucose level tests.

If we can detect someone early enough in T1D, (before their beta cells stop producing insulin), we can delay progression to stage 3. Hence preventing DKA, hospitalizations, organ failure, trauma, and even death.

This saves lives, money and burden on an already stressed, overworked and confused medical system.

We can buy time plus improve outcomes by NOT misdiagnosing. Some people even qualify for immunomodulating therapies. This can change the full trajectory of someone’s life, including their family.

Saving the next generation. One screening at a time.

Detecting before symptoms begin provides an opportunity to prevent hospitalization, DKA, and trauma. Anyone with metabolic issues, family history of T1D, or other autoimmune diseases should be screened.
