Long Island DBT

Long Island DBT DBT and EMDR program on Long Island, New York

Established in 2001, Long Island DBT Group is a DBT adherent private practice consisting of highly skilled clinical social workers and psychologists. Our dedicated staff has been intensively trained by Behavioral Tech, LLC, a training institute founded by the creator of Dialectical Behavioral Therapy (DBT), Dr. Marsha Linehan. Our mission at LI DBT Group is to provide evidence-based treatment to help our clients and their families find a way out of their suffering and build a life worth living. We treat borderline personality disorder, post-traumatic stress disorder, complex trauma, depression, anxiety, obsessive compulsive disorder, substance abuse and eating disorders in children, adolescents and adults. We primarily use DBT, a specialized form of cognitive behavioral therapy, and mindfulness practices to assist individuals who have difficulty managing intense emotions and the resulting impulsive behaviors.

✨ Effectively = Doing What Works ✨
Sometimes we get stuck on being “right” or proving a point, but DBT reminds us to ask: “What actually works in this moment?”

Being effective means focusing less on pride or “shoulds” and more on what will move you toward your goals, reduce stress, or strengthen your relationships.

It’s not about giving in-it’s about choosing responses that actually help, not ones that just feel good in the moment.🌱

💡 DBT Skill Spotlight: Opposite Action

Emotions can be powerful, but they don’t have to be in charge. DBT’s Opposite Action skill invites us to gently challenge those emotions by acting opposite to what the emotion urges us to do, especially when the emotion doesn’t fit the facts or isn’t effective.

This reel shows how small, intentional shifts in behavior can lead to big emotional relief. 😌🌿

March is Social Work Awareness Month, and at Long Island DBT Group we want to take a moment to recognize and thank our incredible team of social workers.

In a time when the need for mental health services continues to grow, our clinicians continue to answer the call with compassion, dedication, and professionalism. Every day they show up for individuals, adolescents, and families with patience, skill, and a genuine commitment to helping people build healthier and more meaningful lives.

We are incredibly grateful for the hard work our team puts in behind the scenes and in the therapy room. The care, support, and encouragement they provide make a real difference in the lives of the people we serve.
Thank you to our amazing staff for the work you do each day. We appreciate you, and we are proud to work alongside you.

Warmly,
Krista Altman, Laura Hussey, Liza Papazian

We’re excited to share some new updates at Long Island DBT Group! 🌅

Please join us in welcoming Lindsay Daniels, LMSW, our new Substance Use Specialist. Lindsay brings a thoughtful, compassionate approach to working with individuals navigating substance use and recovery, and we’re grateful to have her as part of our team.
Along with Lindsay joining the practice, we’re also launching a new addiction-focused track within our Intensive Outpatient Program (IOP). This program is designed to provide structured, evidence-based support for individuals working toward recovery, while building practical skills for emotional regulation, stress management, and healthier coping.
We’re looking forward to expanding the ways we can support individuals and families in our community.
If you or someone you know may benefit from this level of care, feel free to reach out to learn more. 516-627-6201

💡DBT Insight: 🛑 STOP Skill
When emotions run high, it’s easy to act on impulse and to say or do something that makes the moment harder. DBT teaches Crisis Survival skills for exactly these situations.
One of the most effective tools is the S.T.O.P. skill:
S- Stop: Freeze for a moment before reacting.
T- Take a step back: Breathe. Create space.
0- Observe: Notice what’s happening inside and around you.
P- Proceed mindfully: Choose your next move with intention.
This skill helps you pause long enough to keep from making things worse, especially when the urge to act is strong. With practice, it becomes a way to protect your peace and your relationships.
