Silent reflux (also known as LPR or respiratory reflux) happens when stomach contents flow up into the throat and airways, causing symptoms like chronic cough, throat clearing, post-nasal drip, and hoarseness, often without heartburn.
Unlike GERD, which mainly causes heartburn, silent reflux affects the voice box, throat, sinuses, and lungs.
Management includes:
-A low-acid diet
-Lifestyle changes (especially around eating and sleep habits)
-Medications: H2 blockers (e.g., Pepcid) and alginates (e.g., Gaviscon Advance, RefluxRaft) are more effective than PPIs
A comprehensive treatment plan combining diet, lifestyle, and the right medications is key to symptom relief and preventing long-term damage.
