What is Degenerative disc disease (DDD)? DDD is the wearing down of spinal discs, which are rubbery cushions located between the bones in your spinal column. These discs act as shock absorbers and facilitate comfortable movement, bending, and twisting. It is a natural part of aging for everyone's spinal discs to degenerate over time. The primary symptoms of degenerative disc disease are neck pain and back pain. The pain may come and go, lasting for weeks or months at a time, and it can cause numbness or tingling in the arms or legs. Additionally, the pain may radiate down the lower back and buttocks and worsen with sitting, bending, or lifting. DDD is caused by the natural aging process, which leads to the wearing down of spinal discs. As people age, the soft core of the discs, which is primarily composed of water, gradually loses water content. Consequently, the discs become thinner and offer less shock absorption than before. Minor injuries can also result in small cracks in the spinal discs, often near nerves. These tears can be painful, even if they are minor. The pain associated with DDD can occur in the neck or lower back and may extend into the arms, hands, buttocks, and legs. Contact Dr. Semih Gungor today to find out more about degenerative disc disease and the treatments available.

Nerve block injections can effectively treat acute or chronic pain conditions. By blocking pain signals along targeted nerves, these procedures aim to provide patients relief from painful symptoms and inflammation. Additionally, nerve blocks allow for the diagnosis of the underlying source of a patient's pain by observing their response to the medication. This diagnostic information can then be used to develop a customized treatment plan for the individual. Nerve blocks are performed using image guidance technologies like CT or fluoroscopy to precisely deliver medication to the targeted area associated with the pain. This image-guided approach helps ensure the safe and effective treatment of pain while minimizing risks. Trigger point injections are used to address painful areas of muscle containing trigger points, otherwise known as myofascial knots. These knots can be felt beneath the skin and may twitch involuntarily when touched, potentially trapping or irritating surrounding nerves, causing referred pain. Trigger point injections for pain can treat many muscle groups, including those in the arms, legs, lower back, and neck. Additionally, they are used to treat conditions such as fibromyalgia, chronic tension headaches, and myofascial pain syndrome that does not respond to other treatments. Trigger point injection therapy administered by our pain management physicians typically takes approximately five minutes to perform and patients remain awake throughout the procedure. Treatment involves inserting a small needle into the trigger point and injecting medication into the area, which will alleviate pain. For more information about trigger point injections for pain management, please contact us to schedule an appointment with one of our specialists. https://www.hss.edu/physicians_gungor-semih.asp

November is CRPS Awareness Month: Understanding Complex Regional Pain Syndrome.
This November, we're shining a light on CRPS, a chronic condition characterized by severe, burning pain that typically affects an arm or leg following injury or surgery. What makes CRPS particularly challenging is that the pain experienced is disproportionate to the initial trauma, often persisting long after the original injury has healed.
Through greater awareness, we can foster earlier diagnoses, better treatment access, and more robust support systems for those navigating this challenging condition.

Trigger point injections are a great way to address areas of muscle within which knots, also known as trigger points, are present. These knots can be felt through the skin's surface, and when touched they may twitch involuntarily, thus irritating and trapping nearby nerves which in turn causes referred pain. Trigger point injections can be used to treat various muscle groups throughout the body such as those in the arms, legs, lower back and neck. They are often utilized to treat fibromyalgia, chronic tension headaches and Myofascial Pain Disorder that doesn't respond to other treatments. The procedure itself is quick and easy; it usually lasts no more than 5 minutes and patients remain conscious throughout. A small needle is inserted into the trigger point area followed by a local anesthetic or local anesthetic with steroid injection - both of which will help to reduce pain. Contact us today to find out if you're a candidate for trigger point injections for pain relief. https://www.hss.edu/physicians_gungor-semih.asp
