Our amazing patient underwent a series of craniofacial procedures and is finishing her staged reconstruction today-on Valentine’s Day!
Her procedures helped her functionally with improved breathing, eating, dentition, and correction of a cranial base cyst.
This beautiful teenager is interested in fashion and glamour. She is looking forward to finishing her surgeries, and enjoying her last year in high school, prom and graduation.

Secondary Rhinoplasty or ‘revision nose jobs’ are challenging.
The lines on the before images accentuate the concerns of the patient after her previous rhinoplasty performed years earlier.
She complained that her nose was “S-shaped”, not straight. The lines after her secondary rhinoplasty demonstrate straightening of her dorsal lines on the frontal view and perfecting her tip projection on her lateral view.

“We can handle this” is the first lines of the lead article published in ‘Connections’, a Northwell publications mailed to thousands of homes this week. This is what the Hickeys understood from the experienced Lenox Hill Hospital team, even before Payton was born with his severe airway obstruction.
Mom’s anticipated arrival at Lenox for delivery took an unexpected detour in New Jersey when she had to emergently deliver Payton. When he did arrive, Payton had trouble breathing and eating because of a condition called Pierre Robin Sequence (small lower jaw and tongue blocking his airway).
He underwent neonatal jaw distraction (lengthening) a few weeks after birth which successfully resolved these issues. For the family, who is now home, healthy, and happy, that was a very stressful time.

Gender identity refers to an individual’s internal sense of gender. When one knows they are female and male-appearing facial features do not match this internal sense then facial feminization or modification of facial features with surgery is an option.
FFS procedures may differ depending on a patient’s concerns and a patient’s anatomy since no 2 individuals are alike. Office consultations are aimed at trying to determine which, if any, FFS procedures are right for you.

I was honored to be the only civilian keynote speaker at the DHA (Defense Health Agency) Wide Conference on FFS this week. I was very impressed to hear how military bases all over our country are helping active military trans-women undergo transformative facial surgery that allows them to serve as their authentic selves.
We shared technical breakthroughs during this 2 day meeting. Live demonstrations added to the experiential learning during a ‘hands-on’ laboratory. Congratulation to the course director Dr. Richard Yim.

As we learned from Dr. Dana Bregman’s award-winning research presentation this week, the Nasofrontal Junction is extremely important in Facial Feminization Surgery. Often, you can see the profound change on the table at the end of a procedure.
This lovely patient required a frontal sinus setback and dorsal hump reduction.
