Friendships naturally change as children grow, and for many autistic children, those changes can bring unique challenges. Around ages 6–12, friendships often shift from being centered around play to becoming more emotionally connected. Differences in communication styles and social expectations can sometimes lead to misunderstandings. Autistic children do want meaningful friendships, even if those connections may look different from traditional expectations.

Only around 1 in 4 (26%) autistic children report feeling happy in school, highlighting just how important connection, inclusion, and understanding truly are. Every child deserves friendships and relationships that feel meaningful, safe, and supportive.

At CORE, we have counselors trained to meet children where they are, helping them feel understood while building healthy connections, confidence, and coping skills.

Did you know Earth Day has been recognized in the United States since 1970 and it all started right here in Wisconsin.

Ga***rd Nelson, a former U.S. senator and governor, is considered the founder of Earth Day. As a passionate conservation leader he helped spark a nationwide movement to protect our environment and raise awareness about the impact we have on our planet.

Today, Earth Day is a reminder that small, intentional actions can create meaningful change.

How will you make an impact today?

Stress is the physical or mental response to an external cause, such as having a lot of homework or having an illness. A stressor may be a one-time or short-term occurrence, or it can happen repeatedly over a long time. Anxiety is your body's reaction to stress and can occur even if there is no current threat.

A certain level of stress is normal. But when it starts to feel constant, hard to manage, or begins to interfere with your daily life, it’s worth paying attention.

You might notice:
• Trouble sleeping
• Feeling on edge or constantly overwhelmed
• Avoiding things you used to handle
• Difficulty focusing or slowing your thoughts

The good news is that there are ways to support yourself through it.

Try starting small:
• Write things out to clear your mind
• Move your body regularly
• Keep a consistent sleep routine
• Limit caffeine when you're feeling anxious
• Challenge negative thought patterns
• Stay connected to people who support you

Not everything works for everyone, and that’s okay. It can take time to figure out what helps you feel grounded. And if it starts to feel like too much to carry on your own, you don’t have to. Talking to a professional can help you better understand what you're experiencing and find tools that actually work for you. Support is available and things can get better.

We’re excited to share that Aaron Holt, our Clinical Manager and therapist in Waupaca, has recently completed several advanced professional trainings to better support the individuals and couples we serve.

In March, he completed certification training through the Gottman Institute in The 10 Principles of Effective Couples Therapy: What Science Tells Us. This evidence-based approach helps couples reconnect, improve communication, and navigate conflict in healthier ways.

He also recently completed EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing) training at the University of Wisconsin–Milwaukee. EMDR is a research-supported therapy used to help people process trauma and other distressing life experiences.

EMDR works by helping the brain activate its natural healing processes. Much like the body heals from physical injuries, the mind can recover from psychological wounds when the brain’s information-processing system is supported and unblocked.

After completing additional consultation and classroom hours later this year, Aaron will be fully EMDR-certified. We’re proud to keep growing our skills to better serve our community.

April is National Counseling Awareness Month, and this Friday, April 10, is Wear Teal Day to show support and recognition for the incredible work counselors do every day.

Sponsored annually by the American Counseling Association (American Counseling Association), National Counseling Awareness Month highlights the vital role professional counselors play in promoting mental health, wellness, and personal growth. The month also helps reduce stigma, educate the public, and honor the impact counselors have in helping individuals lead healthier lives.

We’d love to see you join in! If you have something teal, wear it this Friday to help celebrate and spread awareness.

April is World Autism Acceptance Month, a time to move beyond awareness and toward understanding, inclusion, and support.

Research shows that 8 in 10 autistic people experience mental health challenges at some point in their lives. This highlights the importance of accessible mental health care, supportive communities, and environments where neurodiversity is respected and valued.

Acceptance means listening, learning, and creating spaces where autistic individuals can thrive exactly as they are.

April is Sexual Assault Awareness and Prevention Month (SAAM). SAAM reminds us how many lives are shaped by this issue—almost everyone knows or loves a survivor, even if their story is held quietly. For many, the impact isn’t something that fades; it’s a weight carried across a lifetime, softened only by support, understanding, and the slow work of healing. This month calls us to meet survivors with empathy, to believe them, and to build a culture rooted in consent and respect. In doing so, we help ensure no one has to shoulder that heaviness without compassion beside them.

My name is Addie and I am the Clinical Manager at our Shawano Outpatient Location. I also am a Licensed Therapist and provide services to children (6+) and adults with Mental Health and/or Substance Use issues. I facilitate adult intensive outpatient (IOP) groups and provide individual therapy with a specialization in complex trauma. My clinical approach integrates EMDR, Brainspotting and somatic-based processing to support nervous system healing and trauma resolution. I also incorporate creative expression into therapy, recognizing the importance of experiential and nonverbal pathways in recovery. My work focused on helping clients build safety, resilience and sustainable change.

When I am not working, I recharge through reading, time with family and being outdoors. Nature keeps me grounded, coffee keeps me going and video games remind me of the importance of play and restoration- values I also bring into my work with clients.

I became the change I once wished for. While none of us can rewrite our childhood experiences, we can heal, reclaim our voice and become the safe, grounded presence we needed when we were younger. That belief is at the heart of my work.

WHO ARE WE?

Core Treatment Services Inc. was founded in 2018 as a resolution to the lack of treatment and recovery resources within the Manitowoc community. Business partners Pastor Chris Gilbert and Carmen Persaud LPC CSAC ICS, combined Chris's experience in establishing two sober living homes and Carmen's twenty year history working with individuals facing mental health and substance use disorders to create a program that fills the persistent gaps in Manitowoc's treatment services.

Since the founding of CORE, the non-profit has had the fortune of many community supporters, including Brett Norrell, President and CEO of Holy Family Memorial- thus leading to the partnership of CORE Treatment Services Inc. and HFM. Both Chris and Carmen are passionate about their work and dedicated to being a part of the changing landscape in Manitowoc County. They are grateful to have partners in the community who are just as passionate.

The mission of CORE Treatment Services, Inc is to make Manitowoc County the healthiest recovery community in the state. We believe that when you treat the individual, you treat the community. When addicted individuals are healed holistically, at their CORE, families are reunited, employers get better employees, communities get leaders, and we change the trajectory of lives for generations. We start by treating the CORE of the individual, but the impact fans out to the entire community because of the profound ripple effect that healing from addiction has.
