Friendships naturally change as children grow, and for many autistic children, those changes can bring unique challenges. Around ages 6–12, friendships often shift from being centered around play to becoming more emotionally connected. Differences in communication styles and social expectations can sometimes lead to misunderstandings. Autistic children do want meaningful friendships, even if those connections may look different from traditional expectations.
Only around 1 in 4 (26%) autistic children report feeling happy in school, highlighting just how important connection, inclusion, and understanding truly are. Every child deserves friendships and relationships that feel meaningful, safe, and supportive.
At CORE, we have counselors trained to meet children where they are, helping them feel understood while building healthy connections, confidence, and coping skills.
