Is it the Sunday Scaries or something else?

Do you ever feel that pit in your stomach on Sunday night? It feels like an anxious, heavy feeling before the week starts, but you just can’t put your finger on why it’s there.

That’s what people often call the Sunday Scaries, the emotional weight that creeps in when rest does’t feel like enough. But what happens when you spend the weekend trying to recover, but still wake up on Monday feeling drained? That, my friends, might be burnout.

It’s easy to think self-care should always feel peaceful or relaxing, but for many people it can actually feel uncomfortable at first.

That’s because self-care often means challenging old survival patterns.

✨ Rest can feel unsafe when you’re used to being busy to avoid stress.

✨ Saying no can feel guilt-inducing if you’ve learned to please others.

✨ Asking for help can feel vulnerable when independence once kept you safe.

Your nervous system is learning that slowing down and caring for yourself is safe.
That takes time…and that’s okay!

Setting a boundary can feel uncomfortable, especially if you’re used to keeping the peace. Here are a few ways to make it easier:

☀️ Use “I” statements.
Try: “I need some time to recharge tonight,” instead of “You’re always asking too much.”

☀️ Keep your tone calm and confident.
You don’t have to over-explain or apologize. Clear and kind is enough.

☀️Stay focused on your need, not their reaction.
You can’t control how someone feels about your boundary, only how you express it.

☀️ Practice ahead of time.
Rehearsing your words can help you sound steady when emotions are high.

☀️ Remember: boundaries protect connection.
They create room for respect, trust, and emotional safety for both people.
