Charles William Rowen (Chuck) was born January 20th, 1943, in Des Moines, Iowa and passed away on January 11th in Mankato, Minnesota at the age of 82.

Chuck described his life with these words: “After high school I joined the U.S. Army and served 3 years active and 3 years inactive reserve. When I got home from the Army, I got a job in a factory and worked there 2 years until I got a job with a vending company. Most all of my working years I worked for a vending company and was a service tech that would go from place to place and fix vending machines. Thru the years I was interested in photography, model railroading, wood working and playing the banjo. After I retired, I started a small company making pens. I sold my pens at craft shows and made sure all of my family and friends had one of my pens.”

Mitchell Chase Allore

With a heavy heart, our family announces the passing of Mitchell “Mitch” Chase Allore, age 37, on January 26, 2026. His loss is felt deeply by all who knew and loved him. Mitch was born on June 10, 1988, to Eric and Kim Allore. He graduated from Mankato West High School and went on to receive an associate’s degree from Ridgewater College, followed by a bachelor’s degree from U of M - Crookston. At West, he participated in football, baseball, hockey and wrestling, and continued these into his college career. At Ridgewater, he played baseball and football and later transferred to U of M – Crookston, where he played baseball and then assisted in coaching the baseball team. His love of baseball ultimately led him to enjoy playing with the Mankato Twins baseball team. Mitch had a great love for the outdoors, which led him to share his passion of landscaping with his dad, Eric.

Mitch was larger than life and lived every day like he was walking into the championship game. His smile was infectious and lit up every room. He had a way of lifting people up, whether they were a friend he had known for years or a stranger he had just met for the first time.

He lived his life for Lindsey, his best friend and the love of his life, and for their three beautiful children. When it came to his kids, Mitch truly was “all-in”. You could always find him coaching their sporting events, cheering the loudest from the sidelines, and believing in his kids with his whole heart. He was so proud of them and he wanted nothing more than for them to know how deeply they were loved.

Mitch dedicated much of his time to helping others by serving on the board of directors for the Anthony Ford Foundation and the Pink and Blue Ribbon Foundation; both of these foundations held a special place in Mitch’s heart. He used his love of sports and business connections, specifically with Universal Sports Auctions, to continue to fundraise for various charities throughout Minnesota. Mitch enjoyed his community and had a knack for getting to know people with ease. He found a strong support system through his AGC Networking group and enjoyed promoting the great services that they provide for the community. Mitch also found spiritual connection and direction through his time spent with Pastor Brad at Crossview Covenant Church of North Mankato.

Mitch is survived by the love of his life, best friend and fiancé, Lindsey Rees; their beautiful children, Jayna, Maddux and Harrison, who were Mitch’s pride and joy; his parents, Eric and Kim Allore; his younger brother, Gus (Josh) Allore; father-in-Law, Craig (Melinda) Rees; sisters-in-law, Kerri (Josh) Mehrling and Breanna (Brad) Bundy; paternal grandparents, Bev (Ron) Dotzenrod; and his maternal grandmother, Helen Arnold. Mitch is preceded in death by his beloved son and guardian angel, Jett; mother-in-Law, Trisha Rees; and his paternal grandparents, Wayne (Dorothy) Allore.

A Memorial Service will be held at CROSSVIEW COVENANT CHURCH, 2000 W Howard Drive, North Mankato, with Pastor Brad Jackson presiding, at 3 p.m. on Monday, February 2, 2026; doors open at 2 p.m. Immediately following the service at church, a celebration of Mitch’s life will take place at THE WOW! ZONE, 2030 Adams St, Mankato. Please show your love and support by wearing sports apparel from the Minnesota Vikings, Twins, Wild or any local Mankato team.

Mitch will be remembered not only by his kids, but also the kids he coached and the lives he touched through the many sports and hobbies he participated in over the years. In addition to his many friends, he will be remembered for the fundraisers he led and the foundations he supported. Above all, he will be remembered by his close family and many friends. We hope you will help us carry Mitch’s spirit forward by sharing his love for the #4, cheering on the Minnesota Vikings, and living every day like you are walking into the championship game.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the family at Mitch’s GoFundMe link: Fundraiser by Laura Doyen : Honoring Mitch’s Legacy for Lindsey and the Kids: www.gofundme.com/f/honoring-mitchs-legacy-for-lindsey-and-the-kids

Please join us in welcoming Nick to the team as our new Production Specialist.

Nick grew up in Mankato and graduated from Mankato West High School before earning his bachelor’s degree from Rockhurst University in Kansas City in 2012. After working with organizations like the Boy Scouts of America and Carleton College, he found his path in funeral service at Gunderson Funeral Home in Madison, Wisconsin, in 2022.

In January 2026, Nick and his spouse returned home to Mankato to be closer to family, and we’re excited to have him join the team at Mankato Mortuary. When he’s not at work, you’ll likely find him hiking, biking, or jogging outdoors, even during Minnesota’s cold winters.

Welcome, Nick. We’re glad you’re here.

David Lee Janovy

David Lee Janovy passed away in Mankato on January 9, 2026, at the age of 91. Born in 1934 in Seward, Nebraska, to Gretchen and Joseph Janovy, he grew up in Newman Grove, where his father was a train station master and telegraph operator and his mother a church organist. Living above the train station, watching trains come and go, sparked a lifelong curiosity about the wider world. As a teenager, he worked as a lifeguard and grocery bagger, played in the school band, attended Boys State, and participated in a psychology research project that ignited his interest in the social sciences.

After graduating from high school in 1952, Dave attended Wayne State College in Wayne, Nebraska, where he met his beloved future wife, Darlene Murphy. They married in 1956, the year they both graduated from college. Dave entered officer training with the U.S. Marine Corps and served for four years, resigning his commission as a First Lieutenant. He remembered his Marine Corps years with great fondness, as well as the happy times he and Darlene spent exploring Washington, D.C. After his military service, Dave began a doctoral program in sociology at the University of Nebraska while Darlene taught elementary school. In 1964, they welcomed their first daughter, Lisa, and soon moved to Madison, Wisconsin, where Dave pursued postdoctoral work at the University of Wisconsin–Madison. In 1966, their daughter Jennifer was born while they were living in Normal, Illinois, where Dave taught at Illinois State University.

A phone call from longtime friend Dwain Petersen encouraging Dave to apply for a position at Mankato State University led the family to Mankato in 1968, where they settled on Westwood Drive in West Mankato. Dave joined Mankato State as Chair of the Department of Sociology. During his thirty-year career at MSU, he served as Chair for ten years, founded and directed the University’s Gerontology Program, served on the Minnesota Board on Aging, and led numerous ElderHostel programs. The academic schedule allowed the family to travel often, visiting relatives across the United States and exploring national parks.

Dave and Darlene also cherished the close friendship of the “Nebraska Group,” four couples who moved from Nebraska to Mankato to work at the University. Like an extended family, Dwain and Carole Petersen, Bill and Polly Webster, and Doug and Jane Ralston celebrated birthdays and other milestones together for more than fifty years.

Following retirement (Darlene from her position as principal of Hoover Elementary School), Dave and Darlene traveled widely, ultimately visiting forty-one countries. They also spent about fifteen winters in Palm Springs, California, drawn by close friends and the area’s natural beauty. When asked which countries he most hoped to revisit, he named Denmark—where he had completed a six-week fellowship—and Bohemia, honoring his Czech roots.

After Darlene’s passing in 2015, Dave remained active in his community and profession. He founded Mankato Area Lifelong Learners and served on the boards of VINE Faith in Action and the Chesley Center for Aging. He continued to travel, taking his grandchildren on many special trips. Throughout his life, Dave stayed curious and keenly interested in others, always teaching and learning, and offering support and guidance to many.

In 2023, Dave moved to the Pillars of Mankato, where he reunited with old friends, made new ones, and served in his final leadership role as President of the Resident Council. He is survived by his daughters, Lisa (Corey) Keyes of Hayesville, North Carolina, and Jennifer Janovy (Randy Meyer) of Edina, Minnesota; grandchildren, Olivia Janovy Meyer of Fort Lauderdale and Hans Janovy Meyer of Minneapolis; and a special “adopted daughter,” Ann Cesafsky of Mankato. The family is grateful to Dave’s many friends and professional associates who shared their love, wit, and wisdom with him—and he with them. They extend deep thanks to the staff at the Pillars of Mankato, Moments Hospice Mankato, and his caring medical team.

Dave kept a book of quotes he found meaningful, and it is fitting to close with this one from Dr. Seuss: “Don’t cry because it’s over. Smile because it happened.”

A memorial service is planned for the spring. Notice will be shared online and in The Free Press. Donations in Dave’s memory may be directed to these organizations in Mankato, which serve older adults:

Henry "Hank" G. Mamer

Henry “Hank” George Mamer passed away peacefully on January 16, 2026, surrounded by his loving family.

A Prayer Service will be held at 4 p.m., Saturday, January 24, 2026 with visitation from 2-4 p.m., all at Mankato Mortuary, 1001 N. Riverfront Drive, Mankato, MN.

Hank was born on April 21, 1938, to Josie and Henry Mamer Sr. He was raised on his family’s farm in New Prague, Minnesota, where he was affectionately known as “Sonny” or “Hank.” He graduated from New Prague High School in 1956.

Following graduation, Hank moved to Mankato, Minnesota, to attend the commercial school and where he began working at Brennan service station. It was there that he met the love of his life and decided to make Mankato his lifelong home. Hank was united in marriage to Carol Borgmeier, and together they shared 51 happy years of marriage until Carol’s passing in 2011. They welcomed two sons, Randy and Kevin, and as a family proudly operated Hank’s Service.

In 1972, Hank purchased the building and opened Hank’s DX. Hank’s Service remained in operation for 53 years, with Hank leading the way. He worked alongside his wife until her passing and also alongside his sons, Randy and Kevin, each and every day. Hank’s infectious smile, quick wit, talent for making a deal, and genuine love for visiting with customers made him a beloved and familiar presence at the station. Hank worked his final shift on December 26, 2025.

Hank’s greatest passion in life was his family. He was a devoted father to Randy and Kevin, a proud grandfather to Lindsay and Matt, and an even prouder great-grandfather to Emma, Bella, and Henry. He was a constant presence at their sporting events, always cheering, honking his horn, and smiling from the sidelines. His family knew without question that they always had his unwavering support.

Always on the move, Hank was well known for his keen eye for a good deal—whether buying or selling cars, tools, or equipment. He was a longtime member of the Mankato Curling Club and Mankato Tennis Club, where he enjoyed many years of friendship and competition. Hank enjoyed playing cards, visits to the casino and just talking to people. Hank also cherished time spent at his favorite local gathering places, enjoying the company of friends and family.

Hank is survived by his children, Randy and daughter in law Lori Mamer, and Kevin Mamer; granddaughter, Lindsay (Geoff) Rozek; great-grandchildren, Emma, Bella, and Henry; brother, Butch (Gloria) Mamer of Jordan, Minnesota; sister, Mary Mamer-Cox (Art Cox) of Portland, Oregon; brother-in-law, Roger (Pat) Borgmeier; sisters-in-law, Pat Lingbeck of Mankato, Minnesota, and Marion (Jim) Falkenhagen of Lakeville, Minnesota; along with many nieces, nephews, and cousins.

He was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Carol; grandson, Matt; parents, Henry and Josie Mamer; in-laws, Robert and Lorraine Borgmeier; brother and sister-in-law, John and Cathy Mamer; brother and sister-in-law, Lee and Arlene Mamer; brothers-in-law, David Borgmeier and Gordy Lingbeck.
