Every afternoon I used to feel like a claw was gnawing at my empty stomach

I’d make healthy choices up until around 3pm and then fall off totally off track despite my best of intentions

My kids would get off the bus to find me scarfing down potato chips in the pantry

And I’m supposed to be someone that helps people loose weight????

Then I took some time to check in with what was going on with ME right around that timeframe…

I was bored.

I was a little anxious about the kids coming home after school

I was dissatisfied with how much I thought I should have accomplished that day.

Potato chips never solved any of that- trust me I tried 100’s of times

Now I pre-empt my afternoons by setting a daily alarm for 230

When the timer goes off I do 3 things
1. drink a massive glass of water
2. write a list or mentally catalog all of the things I HAVE done that day
3. Take 3 deep breaths and envision myself at the end of the day with a big smile on my face

And when I do all 3 it turns out I’m not usually hungry at all…. At least not for food.

Do you have a time of day that you regularly find yourself eating mindlessly?

Anxiety is a mental health condition that can cause feelings of worry, fear, or tension. For some people, anxiety can also cause panic attacks and extreme physical symptoms, like chest pain.

What causes anxiety and anxiety disorders can be complicated. It’s likely that a combination of factors, including genetics and environmental reasons, play a role. However, it’s clear that some events, emotions, or experiences may cause symptoms of anxiety to begin or may make them worse. These elements are called triggers.

Anxiety triggers can be different for each person, but many triggers are common among people with these conditions. Most people find they have multiple triggers. But for some people, anxiety attacks can be triggered for no reason at all.
For that reason, it’s important to discover any anxiety triggers that you may have.

What can you do now to help your anxiety?

Breathe deeply.

Get some perspective. Anxiety can stem from needless worry about a lot of things that aren’t important in the long run.

Talk it out. Research proves that simply naming your feelings can help to calm you down.

Don’t ignore it. Anxiety is like a red flag, telling you that something needs attention. Don’t ignore this sign — contact a professional to help you through it.

Keep an anxiety diary. It is really helpful to understand what sets off your anxiety. We call these triggers or antecedents.

Become more aware of negative thoughts. As it is the thoughts about the situation that causes anxiety, become more aware of what you are saying to yourself in your mind.

Anxiety is frequently connected to sleeping problems. Excess worry and fear make it harder to fall asleep and stay asleep through the night.

Sleep deprivation can then make anxiety worse resulting in a negative cycle involving insomnia and anxiety disorders.

Anxiety is a feeling of worry and unease. It’s normal to experience anxiety occasionally in response to fearful or stressful situations.

Worrying about falling asleep can itself complicate matters, creating sleep anxiety that reinforces a person’s sense of dread and preoccupation. These negative thoughts about going to bed can then create challenges to healthy sleep schedules and routines.

Chronic stress is one of the greatest enemies of the body and its many systems.

Luckily, there are so many ways to reduce stress in our lives and to return to a ‘rest and digest’ state:

- daily meditation

- mindful attitude to everything we do
